I wanted to get one in .338 Winchester magnum for a grizzly hunt next year, but I don't need it jamming on me. I have never talked to anyone that had one jam on them, but I figured with the hundreds of people that read this forum I might get some more input.

I did own a bar mk II in 7mmremmag that did jam on me in cold wet weather despite proper cleaning and maintenance.I sold it to a friend and it jammed on him on a moose hunt.Ikilled my own grizzly with a 338x8mmremmag as he charged us.The bolt action was plenty fast enough to stop the bear in time.
I really like the speed of the semi auto, but I obviously want reliability too. I know, I can't have my cake and eat it too!

Although the are excellent rifles, any auto can and will malfunction sooner or later and usually at the worst possible time. My brother has one and its never jammed or malfunctioned but he has never used it in real bad weather conditions. I have hunted the big bears with a couple of single shots but even a single shot can be reloaded quickly with a little practice.( Ruger NO. One)

I would consider the Remmington 7600 in 35 Whelen. Faster than any bolt, less recoil than a 338 winmag, 3500 lbs/ke up close, and a bigger hole. IMHO
PS: I would bet an autoloader would be more reliable than most hunters/(me) if a grizzly were actually charging and the adreneline was pumping.
Since the 338win produces about 500ftlbs more energy at the muzzle it makes sense that it would produce more recoil than a 35 whelen.
As to the reliability part,I can speak from actual experience having actually been charged by a grizzly, and the bolt action was not only reliable but very fast in getting off two shots.

Maybeit was just that you shot a slow bear!
It certainly was a lot slower after taking two slugs from a 338x8mmremmag.
Im a little late jumping into this, but I know a little bit about this rifles reliability. My dad has used one in 7mm rem mag here in Alaska for over 30 years now. It is the only gun he uses up here. However, he doesnt hunt brown bears. I told him that I wanted to get one in 338, he said that he wouldnt do that. His gun has had its share of problems and to just stick with a bolt gun. Mind you he hasnt had enough problems to want another gun, but he has had enough not to reccomend it to anyone.
