IMO it's the best bolt action rifle ever made....today, yesterday or ever. The only action that stands up to it are the post war Mausers.
They are not without their problems.....every one I ever bought needed to be glass bedded and have the barrel free floated.....out of the box they're not to brag about. Further they need a trigger adjustment but their trigger is easily adjustable except for creep.....and if that needs correction it's done on a precision mach.....I use a surface grinder.
In the end this is the rifleman's rifle extroadinaire.....worth the time and trouble to make them as good as they can be.
If you want 1/2" groups this might not be your gun.....but they'll shoot extremely well and as good as need be for the task at hand.
Pros:
-claw extractor for reliable extraction
-safety that actually blocks the firing pin. Some, like the Rem. 700, don't.
-blade ejector
-simple fool proof reliable trigger design
-bolt can be dissassembled without special tools
-classic stock design
-coned breech for more reliable feeding
- integral recoil lug
Cons:
- may not be quite as accurate as somepush feed designs out of the box
Overall, it's an excellent design andif I were in the market for a new rifle it would probablybe myfirst choice.
Just got a supershadow , model 70 in 270 wsm , it shoots 3/4 inch at 100 yards all day . The first thing I did was adjust the triger weight down , easy doing .

I have had great service out of my model 70's.I can't say anything bad about the others. But I can't say enough about the model 70.The first one I bought was a Pre-64 in .264 Mag.still got it.Like the others said they might not be the best out of the box .But it doesn't take much to make it the best.

hey dugl, i can relate. i just bought myself the same setup that you have except in 300 wsm. slapped a brand new leupold vx III 4.5-14x40 scope on it. my father's going to take it to the range soon and said he report back how it shot. i cant wait to hear!

IMO, it's a fantastic gun. I got a package deal at Wal-mart in 30.06. Mine shoots relatively well with 1" groups at 100 yards when i do my part. I have other rifles to compare it to and the Winchester just appears to be of good quality all for under $400 (with cheap scope and sling)
I have a Model 70 classic stainless with a walnut stock. Best looking best shooting gun ever. Too bad they dont sell this configuaration anymore, it is beautiful. Relaible as anything. It will shoot near .5moa if i do my part.
It has some work done to it, but a stock gun will shoot 1moa most every time.
