Default Ballistics for the 30-30

I have a Marlin 336W in 30-30, and I am trying to decide what is the best distance to sight it in at. Would 100 yards be good. I looked at a ballistics chart on the remington site and between 100 and 200 yards the bullet drops between 6 and 8 inches. Does anyone know the ballistics before 100 yards would it be high by alittle or alot? Just so I know for when I go hunting if I should hold higher or lower for distances shorter then 100 and longer then.

Sight it at 3 inches high at a hundred yards and it will probaly be
dead on to 150-175.

hope this helps. with 100 yd. zero with 150 grains bullet
1/2 low @ 25yds.
dead on @40 yds. this is your first zero
1/4 high @50 yds.
about a 1/2 high @75 yds.
dead on @100yds. this is your second zero
3/4 low @125yds.
2- 1/4 low @ 150yds.
you could pretty much aim dead on out to 130 or 140 yds.

I like to sight in my rifles to be 3 inches above line of sight at the bullets highest point in it trajectory.

So.........................

If you are using 150 grain factory loads I would sight in about 2.5 inches high at 100 yards which would put you back to zero at aproximately 175 yards and about 2.5 inches low at 200 yards.

If you are shooting 170 grain factory loads then I would sight in 3 inches high at 100 yards and again you would be back to zero at aproximately 175 yards and about 3 inches low at 200 yards.

These numbers are aproximate, but should be close, and you will have to shoot at these distances to verify.

Having said all that if you are hunting where a 100 yard shot is unlikley then sight it in to be zeroed at 100 yards which will put the bullet 3 inches low at about 160 yards.

.......
Yes. Sight in approx. 2-1/2" high at 100yds. You'll be approx.
6"-8" low then at 200yds. No holdover needed out to 150yds.
And, don't worry about holding low. Not that much rise to worry about.
Note: This is with a 170gr. bullet with a muzzle velocity of approx. 2000fps.

I would sight the 30-30 in to be dead on at 100 yards. This is the most effective way to use the cartridge!

LOL! Well said and to the point!

The legendary 30-30 is a short range cartridge that many people try to eek out to 200 yards. It's effective range ismaybe about 150 yards at best.

You didn't say if you have a scope on the 30-30 or not. Some people scope them, some don't. Some actually think "putting a scope on a lever gun is like putting combat boots on a ballerina" - that quote still cracks me up!

I have my Marlin 30AS sighted at 1/2" high at 50 and I'm dead on at 100, and I leave it there. I use Remington Core Lokt 170gr rounds, which my Marlin seems to prefer.

Keep the ol' 30-30 simple and out to about 100 yards and you'll be fine. Good luck this season!
