Default Remington Model 7LS in 7mm or a 30.06

Here is my question- I am looking to buy 1 hunting rifle that will work well for me in Maine for Whitetail but will also be ample for larger game. What do you all think? The Remington Model 7LS in 7mm Ultra Mag or a 30.06 (model undecided)

I DONT THINK THE MODEL 7 COMES IN .30-06 OR 7MM,MAYBE YOU SHOULD TRY 308 OR 7-08 IN THE MODEL 7, OR THE 06 OR 7MM IN THE 700 MODELS.ALL SHOULD WORK GOOD.I WOULD GET THE MODEL 7 IN .308 OR THE 700 IN .30-06.FOR THR BEST AMO. CHOICES.THE MODEL 7 IS SMALLER AND LIGHTER.

If you want a Mod. 7, go with the 7mm-08 and 7mm mag in the Mod. 700.

7mm Rem SA Ultra Mag is what their site says, not the 7mm-08 (???)

Avoid the SAUM cartridges...they're headed for obsolescence.

If you're sold on the Remington 700 I'd recommend the .30-06 as a minimum and the 7MM Rem Mag applies as all of that. The ADL and other models considered but these are long action guns. Remember you said "bigger than deer" game.

In the short action guns maybe the WSM cartridges are good but such cartridges as the 7MM-08 and .308 are still very well known and proven rounds for things to moose etc. I'd prefer the .30-06 but the improvement is small indeed.

The .30-06 suffers from being so common. It's not new or flashy or impressive to say. Make no mistake about it.....this is one very serious big game hunting round and with today's premium bullets and reloads it's better than ever. There's a reason that half the closets in the USA (and maybe the world) has one!!!!

very well put vapo. i would definately go with the 06 that's what i got. it's definately a great cartridge. i would be seriously surprised if you were disappointed with the 06.

Definantly the 06 vs the 7 MM Remington Short Mag. You may find it is not around in 10 years. Even the 7 MM WSM is not doing well and it outperformes the short action Reminton 7 MM hands down. VaporDog hit the nail on the head the 06 just keeps improving with age as the powder and bullets (many of which are designed for the 06 due to its popularity) are improved.
