Well, I did it.....I finally booked a bison hunt on a ranch in Montana. There was a cancelation and I filled it at a big discount. This is a 4X4 hunt and on foot after getting to w/n 1/2 mile of the herds.
I'm told there are some 5 year old bulls there and they're pretty big.
What should I take as a rifle. .30-06, .300 H&H, .338 Win Mag or my .404 Jeffery?
Well, take this for what it is worth. If I remember right, Alaska has a minimum requirement of a 200 grain bullet to hunt bison. Wyoming has aminimum requirement also. I know the state laws don't apply here as you will be hunting private land, but I would use something such as states' requirements as a possible guidline. Now, with that aside, I would probably take the .338 Win Mag!! Of course the .404 would be nice also. I would leave the .30-06 or .300 H&H home, though.

I dont know why, but for me it just wouldent quite seem right to hunt bison with a bolt action, probably too many westerns I guess. My first choice for such a hunt would be a Sharps Replica in 45-110, BP loads of course. Now it you simply must go modern, I'd go with the .300H&H. Good luck with the hunt.
Sharps Shiloh in Big Timber Montana is a place to visit.....love it there. They make that gun in 45-110 as suggested and you're absolutely right...it's the gn to use. Sadly they're about $2,500 and take a long time to get.....I am short the cash and the time.....but it's an ideal thought.
Thanks
I would use the 30-06. I don't think that you will need more than that. A good 180 grain bullet through the lungs will be ok.

heres a video of one shot with a 480 ruger and it barly notices it at first but then drops and few seconds later. so i personaly would do with your biggest gun.

cma3366a,
I'm with you on this one. If I had a once in a lifetime chance to hunt Bison I would go traditional all the way. To me it just wouldn't seem right otherwise.
How would 45-70 in the Sharps work? Black Powder of course. I think it would be about half the price of the 45-110.
If the range is within reason, I think the 45-70 would work.

I would jump all over the chance to use the Jeffery on a bison! As an added bonus, on a 5 year old bull, you will know what to expect if you ever get a whack at a cape buffalo! What kind of rifle is it?
