Default bolt action accuracy...be honest now

with the exception of varmint rifles and .22 caliber rifles in center fire, of all the people that post that their hunting rifle can shoot 1 MOA or less, how many of them could prove it by going to the range and showing you how they shoot a 5-shot (or even a three shot for that matter) group at 100 yards.

Will you get a good 1" group or excuses?

Well I never shoot five shot groups from my big game rifles. However the rifles that I now still have, have shot one inch three shot groups. I think my rifles will do one inch groups but I can not do it every time out. I have my good days and and not so good days at the range. If the rifle does not recoil much, then my wife can almost always shoot better groups than I can. She has steadier hands and nerves. Because I am not a great shooter of targets, I always have my wife or another shooter try a group or two before I give up on a rifle. In reality I won't keep a rifle that I can not shoot a two inch group every time out. I can't ask more of my rifle than I am capable of.

The only rifle I have that I know for a fact to shoot less than 1moa is my .270 Winchester that my grandfather passed down to me some years ago.It will hover around 3/4 inch if I do my part and sometimes shoot a clover leaf. This is with regular Remington 130 grain core lokts.

The rest of them I just do not have the time to go out and shoot enough to see how accurate they (or I) really are.

I use to have a lot more time to shoot and could experiment more but I gotta work to pay the bills.[:'(]

I can come close with my inline muzzle loader, I don't know if I could pull it off every time. But I bet out of 3 groups at least one would be 1 inch or better. I don't own a high powered rifle any more, so I can't say anything about that. And from what I can see from my slug gun it would be pretty darn close well with the right ammo. Of course that is after subtracting the diameter of the hole, since one hole is darn near an inch.

I know with my .17 HMR I would be upset if I couldn't get at least 1 inch in good conditions. But like you said, that really doesn't count.

I've got two Winchesters that can do it, even with me at the trigger! When I haven't had too much caffine and nicotine, that is!

There is a difference in the rifle being capable of 1" or smaller groups.....and the operator being able to consistently shoot up to the capability of the rifle. Indeed, there is variability in this, no matter how practiced the rifleman, or how good the equipment. If one has a 1 MOA rifle....and the ability to shoot that well...does that mean that these will be the results ALL of the time (let alone , MOST of the time) ? I think not. Every one of us has "off" days.

I don't consider having a 1 MOA rifle to be such a huge technological leap - I have an old military Mauser-type rifle that, since being glass-bedded and free-floated, is certainly capable of 1" or smaller groups. I have achieved this, with handloaded ammunition. However, can I say that I am able to duplicate this performance - consistently ? Certainly, NO. I am SOMETIMES able to get this kind of accuracy - but certainly NOT all of the time.

I think alot of rifles today are capable of 1 inch groups, but like others have already stated it depends on the shooter as well. I have rifles that will shoot 1 inch and slightly better, but I can't always pull it off. I have a Rem 700 classic that shoots great with handloads and won't shoot anything else even close to an inch. I aslo have 308 that will shoot factory ammo at an inch, if I hold up my end of it. I think the posts you seewhere people have rifles that shoot 3/4 or 1 inch groups is probably the BEST the rifle has shot , NOT the AVERAGE grouping.
