Default Opinions Please on New Gun Purchase

I am interested in a new gun in .300 WM or .300WSM. Bass Pro has a great sale right now on a Winchester M70 Coyote in .300WSM Stainless Steel w/ Laminate wood color stock.

I currently have a Winchester Model 70 Heavy Varmit with a SS fluted barrel in .308. I am looking for a different rifle because of the weight of my M70 in .308. The coyote model is a fairly heavy gun. It is about 1lb lighter than my M70 in .308 but about 1.5lb heavier than a feather weight.

The deal is that I think I am getting a really good price on it. It is listed at $729 but I was able to get a rain check for it at $449.

I like the gun but it isn't exactly what I am looking for because of the weight. But at the same time the price is definetly right.

What should I do?

Tom

I hate it when stores do this. They give you a 50% off sale and then raise the list price.

But anyway, bass pro here in Baltimore also had that same sale two weeks ago. The coyotes go regularly for 560 or so. So you are saving 100 dollars. From what I have seen with the coyotes is sometimes you can get a out of box shooter, but alot of folks have to do some bedding and of course work on that trigger. They are not bedded the best in the world.

We've all made this mistake.....

Don't buy on price.....save until you can buy the gun you want.

If your 308 is too heavy then why spend $450 to save only about a pound. Having 2 rifles in your gun cabinet that are too heavy for you to take into the field isn't a solution, it just compounds the problem. Save a little more money a get alight sporter or carbine type rifle that you like.

I agree 100 percent with DM and Vapodog.. I would go for a rifle which fits what you really want. With a 308 already, I would go with a complete different caliber like either a 260, 280 or a 325 WSM or a 35 something. You have the 30 cal. Well Covered already. IMO.

If you were just going to use the coyote as a "beanfield" rifle, I'd say get it. BUT, if you plan to do any hunting where walking/stalking is involved, the gun is, IMO, just too heavy. As stated previously, be patient and save a few bucks, You'll eventually find a "deal" on a new WSM or win mag. Walmart seems to have the WSM calibers in the Win shadow or super shadow (I don't know which), and they are in the 4-$500.00 range I believe. And if you want something else, just save for it. No need in getting a gun you don't really want!
