Think I've decided to get a slug gun -- probably the HR Ultra with all the good press it has gotten on this bb in last week. One question, though, how will the 20ga perform vs 12ga?I hear the concern over the possible meat destruction of the 12ga gone astray. Also, the 12ga slug is a Big chunk of lead. That said, do the 20's match the 12 in speed, accuracy, knowdown power, etc? And, are they available in a sabot as easily as the 12. Thanks for your opinions!
The difference in any "meat destruction" will not be really noticeable and more will depend upon YOUR shot placement (i.e. marksmanship). Good rule of thumb is to not shoot deer in the roasts, etc. The heart area is the choice. I think you know that by your comment of astray.
Of course the 20's knockdown power will be less than a 12's, but unquestionably lethal enough for whitetails.
Accuracy? The 20's (I know especially in the H&R) are known to be a bit better than the 12.
Good luck making those decisions
Availablility? I can't think of a 12 gauge offering that isn't available in 20. Sometimes new stuff is introduced for a year (maybe 2) in 12 only w/ 20 gauge availability soon after. I believe the H&R Ultra came out in 1994 in 20 gauge only (model 980) and then 1995 or 1996 in 12 gauge.
Yes the 20ga can be found easily in sabot loads. The 20ga will take down deer size game as quick as the 12ga, and the 20ga does have great down range power, get the 20ga, and that H&R is one hell of a gun
I would suggest using what youare comfortable and more accurate with, shot placement is always the deciding factor when it comes to stopping tangos, err I mean game animals...
There 20 ga will absolutely do the trick. The one issue, which is admitedly minor, is the need to be more selective when choosing ammo. The difference in performance between the older slugs and modern sabots is much more profound in 20 ga ammo than in 12 ga. As long as you choose quality premium sabots you can expect trajectories close to that of a 12ga, only with less downrange energy.

The dead deer will never know the difference. And both will be equally effective with both having virtually identacle ranges on deer size game animals.
