Default .30 Herret???

Im wanting a pistol barrel for my Encore, and am wanting something to hunt whitetails with. The local gunshop has a really good deal on a couple different .30 Herrett barrels, but I dont know much about the round, except what I found in my reloading manual. What Id like to know is how is this round for deer, and what kind of range can I shoot accurately with a smal scope?? Where can I find brass and dies for reloading this round? Thanks, any help is appreciated.

halcon, thanks I looked at MidwayUSA and found the brass, pretty high, almost 30 bucks for 20 rounds of brass, but the dies werent bad at all. My reloading manual shows it with 110 grainrifle bullets reaching velocities of 2300 -2400 fps out of a 10 inch barrel. and slightly slower with 130 grainers. It seems like it would work well for deer sized game, but Ive never hardly heard of it, and have no idea how far it will shoot, but 100-150 yards would do fine I think. Thanks, hope to find out more if possible.

Honestly I would rather have the 300 whisper. It is slightly faster than the herrett and with the added benefit that Corbon offers a 150 grain factory for it.

However if you want some information on the Herrett here is a great link.

Brass is formed using 30-30 cases and I would imagine that RCBS makes these dies as standard production.

The 30 Herret was designed for long range silhouette shooting. It can reach velocities slightly higher than the 30-30. The cases can be made easily from 30-30 brass. I had one and made all my own brass. You can get a trim die and run the 30-30 case in and cut off what sticks out. Then you fireform the brass with a reduced load and your done. I also had a 35 Herret. same thing just necked up to 357. It will do anything that the 30-30 will do. It uses less powder that the 30-30 but is more effecient. I liked the caliber and it worked well on deer with the 125 grain Nosler Ballistic tip. Good Luck.

I had a .30 Herret in a Contender barrel. I trimmed the cases by hooking a power drill to my case trimmer and zipping the excess off. I liked the cartridge until I had it rechambered for a .300 savage. I could buy ammo over the counter, could shoot 130 bullets as fast as I could shoot 110's in the Herret and NO CASE TRIMMING. I also liked the 150 grain bullets better for the mulie bucks I was hunting and 180's for elk. I was very happy with this gun and I still sold it. Boy was I dumb. Another cartridgethat would be worth looking into is the .30/40 Krag. SSK industries does the rechambering of Contender barrels to both cartridges for a very reasonable price. You could buy the Herret, have it rechambered and probably save amoe money over the cost of a new Encore barrel.

Thanks for the replies guys, Im looking at one for my Encore, a buddy has a gun shop and has had three 30 Herrett barrels and one 35 Herrett barrel for a coiuple years, and said he would sell any of them for 125 bucks or less, so its definitely cheap enough to try out, even if I do decide to have it rechambered. Ive never owned a gun that I had to make my own brass for, but you all make it sound like it may be easy enough for even me to do. I found brass at Midway but it was very expensive, so I might just get the trim die and some 30-30 brass. Is that all I need, is a trim die, and the regular die set? How many times will I expect to be able to load brass? How large of a charge would I use to fireform brass? and with what bullet to fireform? Thanks for all the info, Ive already learned a lot form you all about this round, it sounde like it will work well for what I want. How far can I expect it to shoot accurate with 110 or 130 grain bullets, and is it fast enough to make a ballistic tip or soft point open up well? Sorry for all the questions.

I currently have a 30 Herrett for my TC. What everyone has already said is pretty much true, I make my cases using 30-30 cases and then fireform them. When this round first came out, it was considered to be the most powerful 30 cal handgun cartridge. It's still very effective and is a real deer stopper. It's just sort of fallen by the wayside because there are so many different rounds out there now.

charge your cases at 90% for a fireform load, I always shot the speer plinker 308 cal 110 gr bullets when fireforming for my herrett. just make sure to set the die to heaspace on the shoulder, you'll get much better case life

I had a 30 Herret for some years, it's a pretty good round, but it's a pain makeing up the cases, which is what i always did.

To get good velocity out of it you have to stay with lighter bullets. For "heavier" bullets the 30-30 is a better cartridge.

I think only reason you see them around cheap is because no one likes dealing with the brass problem.
