Default Opinions on Mossberg Slugsters

Taking the advice from the forum and forgoing slug barrell for my Benelli. However, the used slug guns I have found are way out of my price range. I can get one of the new Mossberg 535 ATS slugsters at Wal-mart for $280. What is the consensus of quality on the Mossberg slug guns?

Well, Mossbergs are inexpensive, and the design & execution reflects an attempt to keep them that way! However, the Model 500 is one of those slide-action shotguns purchased in mass quantities for military use, and the military chooses reliable firearms for the troops. Deer hunters in the Southern Tier of counties in NY have to use shotguns (or ML rifles), and a lot of them use Mossbergs. These guys generally like them.

I purchased a 500 about 10 years ago, and also got a rifled barrel 3 years ago.

Accurate to 100 yards - nearly as good as my 30-30.

My only suggestion is to recommend the 20 guage. A 12 guage slug that goes astray can do a lot of meat damage.

I have the 500 as well. It has performed just as good as any shotgun i have ever owned. Its great for the price. I would buy another mossberg without a question.

I own 2 which are about 15 & 25 yrs old. The ONLY problem I ever had was the safety on the older gun. That was big problem with older models. They are Ugly, noisy slide, and heavy. Consider the 12g rifled slugster or at least put a rifled barrel on the basic 500 model. I bought an 870 Special Purpose last year. Much nicer gun to handle in field, but the 500 IMO is better built.
