Default How much do you shoot?

every year I here about the big one that got away,
you know that hunter that shoots 4 /5 times, and a miss.

and I allways ask how much do you shoot?
and most of the time its under 20 shots .

I shoot no less then 300 shots a year.
I wont take a gun hunting unless I know the gun.
thats at least 100 shots.

I shoot 1-2 boxes(box of 20) of ammo a week. And try to pratice all shooting positions, sitting and standing, not just bench rested.

Guns cause crime, like flies cause garbage.

I shoot several hundred rounds of centerfire fom spring until the season starts.Ranges are 100 to 500 yards and positions range from benchrest to prone, off a knee and freehand. In addition I shoot another few thousand rounds of rimfire.

I also have a 22 rifle about the same size and action of my deer gun. I shoot about 1 brick(550 rounds) a week. And as far as shotguns, I shoot about 2-6 games of trap a week.

Guns cause crime, like flies cause garbage.

Muzzy, I think I know what you're getting at and If I am right, I agree that its a rare deer hunter who shoots enough to get really familiar with his equipment. I had a small firearms business for several years, and have been a shooter and hunter all my life, and the biggest disappointment is the general lack of competence among the masses. I think a big part of the problem is politics. We sent out a letter in our gun club two years ago announcing a centerfire "fun" match with "any legal hunting rifle" There were slightly over 270 letters mailed out, and notices put up in a dozen stores in three different towns in the area. On the day of the match, we had less than ten shooters show up. For whatever reason, people just seem to be ashamed of shooting where somebody will see them. We have this discussion alot, of how to get people involved, but havent come up with much. I am in three hunting clubs with a total membership of about 40, and I would bet my 401 that not two of them can hit a pie plate offhand at 100 yards three times in a row. I am guessing that the negative connotation given to guns in the press these days sinks into some peoples minds and also I think most folks dont want anyone to see how poorly they actually shoot. In reality, most of them arent nearly as bad as they think they are, they just dont want to find out or something. Then again, my opinion is biased, shooting is my main hobby, and I am wishing everyone was like me I suppose. I wish more folks would take an interest in some form of shooting. I shoot muzzleloaders from Jan to Aug in matches at two clubs monthly and attend three or four big matches a year, and practice once or twice a week during the season, me and some of my friends shoot silhouettes every saturday with centerfires from Jan til about May(when it gets real hot). In a typical year I will shoot between two and five thousand rounds of centerfire rifle and at least that many shots with the flintlock as well. I am going to take up BPCR next year too, there is a range two hours from here that is starting that game. Well, didnt mean to babble on, my coffee is kicking in! heh heh.....I keep my rws pellet rifle proped up by the back door too, there is almost never a day that I dont shoot something. Its bowseason here in Ga now, and I am busy trying to slam arrows through deer. So far its Larry 1, deer 0. Lets all go shoot something. I think your 100 shot warm up is good for a deer hunter, that many rounds will give you a feel for a rifle. There are alot of hunters out there that have never fired their gun, they took it to a shop, got it bore sighted, and head out to slay the monster buck at 300 yards. How goofy is that? I guarantee you it happens though.

When I used to shoot at the public ranges, I would see guys show up with a couple paper plates, a box of shells and a roll of tape. Most guys would be happy putting three or four shots inside the plate somewhere(we're talking 9 inch plates here)and pack up and go home. One group of guys shooting a 30-30 did this last week at the gun club I was shooting at.He shot 3 times and his freind shot 3 times. He told his freind he had to save the rest of his shells for deer season.

I shoot more times a year than I can count, probably 1000 rounds of various centerfire, and 5000 rounds of rimfire .22 and .22 mag combined( soon to add .17HRM) and a couple hundred shotshells.

im with you larry>.
to many hunters dont put the time in.
they don't know how much fun it is to shoot, all day.
when you can get 5 to 7 guy out to the range and shot
some 80 to 100 round.it's just a great time.
