I found that the Brenneke KO slugs worked very well, in my 870 (with factory slug barrel). These have an attached red plastic wad....that stabilises the slug in flight, similar to the feathers on a shuttlecock. The Brenneke slugs always produced about 2 -3" groups at 50 yards, for me. I could even get 6 - 7" inch groups at 100 yards....though I had to "hold over" so much, this was inconsistent. I must disagree with those that say that just about any (so-called) rifled slug will give equal accuracy. I tested, in addition to the Brenekes, Remington, Federal and Winchester slugs. No comparison, in my gun. The Brennekes were worlds better.
My rem 870 has a rifled barrel, so it's a different animal, but my Mossberg 500 smoothbore (cylinder bore) likes the Remington Sluggers, and Federals with 3" groups at 50yds from a rest. The slugs from Winchester and Breneke gave me no better than pie plate at 50 yds from the bench.
I have to recommend a rifled barrel with sabots for slugs.
With the right ammo, it makes my smoothbore groups look really sad.
Good luck.

I have shot them all...I get 3 inch groups at 100 yards with Federal 2 3/4" 1 oz. rifled slug F127RS out of my smoothbore 870. Three shots...three deer, so far. Good luck!
Well, for a smooth bore, any rifled slug will work about the same. And as cheap as they are, try them all. Good luck
This ain't usually so! Most smoothbore shotguns will show a definite preference for one brand of slugs! For example, I once bought a 12-ga. Ithaca Deerslayer smoothbore, and put a 2.5X scope on it. On the same day, my hunting buddy got himself a 12-ga. Remington 870 with rifle sights but a smoothbore slug barrel. We bought a bunch of different brands 12-ga slug of ammo and went to the range.
My gun would shoot 4" groups at 100 yards using Remington Foster-type"rifled" slugs, but would not hit the side of a barn with Federal or Winchester Foster slugs, and would not shoot Brennekes muchbetter. However, my buddy's gun LOVED Brennekes andshot Winchester slugs pretty well too, but was not worth a damnwith Remington or Federals!
Try several brands, including Lightfields and Brennekes, as these hit much harder and penetrate better than pure lead, hollow "badminton cock" (Foster) slugs!! But use the kind that shoot most accurately in your gun.

If you have a barrel with interchangable chokes try a different choke and see if it makes it more accurate with a particular brand of ammo. Just don't use a super full turkey choke.
From what I have read and seen with the rifled slugs the fins just smash down when they go thru the choke, it won't hurt anything. I beleive the slugs are actually a bit smaller than the barrel.
My mossberg 500 shot winchesters pretty good out to 65 or 70 yards. After that it was a crap shoot. I limited myself to 60 yards with gun if I used it. It was a back up for my inline, not my primary weapon. This year I switched to a H&R Ultra. My buddy had a 20 guage auto that will shoot slugs pretty well out to about 90 yards with a smooth bore.
