Default Deer with slugs

Okay I've got a burning question. Who has shot a deer with a slug? I would think that a slug, especially a 12ga. slug would tearup alot of a (whitetail) deer, am I right? Also what is the range of a slug out of a 12ga?

Shot a few dozen. I see more damage with a 270win, but the 12ga puts a nice hole in the deer. And seems to have more knockdown.

You will find many people here who have shot deer with slugs. As far as damage, it all depends on the same general factors that effect normal bullet expansion. I would however say they do less damage than you would expect.

As far as range, the quality slugs will carry plenty of energy to kill a deer to 200 yds easy. The drop is in the area of a foot though.

slugs can be very deadly on deer,
with a rifled slug barrel ,can be good to 150 yards.
sabot slugs tend to be the most acurate in a rifled barrel.
In states like n.j (no rifle deer hunting)this is the best for longer ranges.and they have gotten alot better with the new ammo types.

JC when you say that "the drop is in the area of a foot", are you talking about the bullet drop being a foot?

200 yards is really pushing it but with practice it could be done I've killed many deer with my 12 gauge all less than 100 yards away

in tight hunting places, I have killed a few deer with my 20 ga. with slugs. I'd rather use my 30-30.

The 12 ga. slug is very effective. I have taken 20+ deer and all but 4 have been taken with a 12ga. shotgun slug. Most taken with the Remington slugger, then Brennke, and in the most recent 8 years Federal's best line of sabots. I have decided and will stay with the Federal Barnes Xpander. As for meat condition, yes a 12ga. slug is more costic, but when placed in the proper shot location, cannot be beat for knockdown and retrieval. I don't know anyone who eats lung!

Jcchartboy, knows a lot more than me and you should listen to what he has to say.

Good luck.

Oh! I forgot range. I have taken deer out to 150 yards with my Mossberg 695. Everyone can get involved in a debate about range, but in my experience 150 is the max. Strecthing this can only be done by steady hand and very accurate gun and slug.
