Trying to decide on which caliber and load to use for black bear.Shots will be no further than 200 yds.Got a Rem 7600 in .270 win or Ruger 77 Mk II in .308 win. Thanks for any advice.
ummmm good ?, i woud pick the 308 just because of the bigger bullet diamiter and 180 core-lokt ultra bond> but that is my opinion

Marlin 336a 3-9x40 30-30 170 gr Federal fusion
Either will be fine for blackie. I'd pick the one that gave me the most confidence and shot the best with a decent bullet. For Black bears I'dstart witha nosler partition or bonded bullet like Nosler accubond, Hornady Intrebond or Swift Scorrico. Something that will open up a decent wound channel yet still pentetrate.
Either one can do the job on Black Bear. IMO, also depends a little on where you'll be hunting (open areas or woods, bait, etc.?), and how big the bears get in your area.
In any case I'd pick the heavier bullets available for these two cartridges, 150gr. in 270Win. and 165-180gr. in 308Win. Federal has a good load for the 270, using a 150gr. Nosler Part. bullet. For the 308Win., check out the Remington Core-Lokt Ultras, or again, ammo using the Nosler Part. bullets, and also the Trophy Bondeds.
If the bear get real big in your area I'd go with the 308Win., and a good 180gr. bullet.
Can't go wrong with either as long as you choose a stongly constructed bullet and you do your part with bullet placement. Use one and take the other as a back-up.
To further assess the importance of a boat tail, note these pairs of Speer spitzer bullets of the same weight and caliber. In each pair, the first bullet has a flat base, and the second has a boat tail.

A list of pointed (spitzer type) hunting bullets considered a good bet for long range shooting in their respective calibers, with their ballistic coefficients, follows. Boat tail bullets are designated "BT," all other bullets have flat bases.

Heads= 308, tails =270, now go flip a coin. One is as good as the other! You can get heavier bullet weights in the 308 (165 gr. and 180 gr.), but a good 150 gr. Nosler Partition or a 140 gr. Trophy Bonded Bear Claw from a 270 Win. isall you'll need for black bear! If you can put the bullet where you want it to go, you won't be able to tell the difference between the two!
