I wouldn't buy one handloader or not. Not with all the 45/70 brass and ammo available and cheaper

It may be cheaper OEH, but the data out there is so confusing with the 45-70. Marlin won't help any at all. Seems you can't get the straight answer from anywone on the allowable pressures. But with a 450 Marlin, its simple.

I am starting to load for my 45-70 and all I know if I would like to kick it up to a 300gr bullet going at 2000fps and I will be happy.

The .450 uses .45-70 bullets and can push a 350gr bullet at 2250+

Because several manuals and manfactures disagree on the pressures. What new reloaders fail to understand is all a manual is telling you, is one guy had this luck with this gun. Thats it. Even Sierra will admit this. It doesn't mean it will work great in your gun, or even be safe.

yes but if you buy a marlin guide gun in 45/70 it is the same strength and will handle the same pressure as the 450, you can exactly duplicate the 450 with a 45/70 load. the only reason for the large belt is so it wont chamber in an 1863 springfield or a 7 rem. mag

Aw yes, but then there's different versions of the story to this also. There is articles saying they are not identical. That the 450 uses different actions. Yes, I tend to believe they are. I don't work at the factory and can't verify it as I don't believe too many people can on here. But yes, I believe they are identical actions.

Bottom line, is, there is no guess work about loads or anything else with a 450 marlin.

Hey ridge, what is your dupicate load for the 45-70. Just curious as I am working up one now.

Starting 42gr of IMR4198 going up to 51gr. This is with a 300gr partition.

I got the 45-70 cuz you can buy good plinking (does a 350 grain bullet qualify as plinking?) rounds just about anywhere and if you need 450 Marlin type power you can buy Buffalo Bore or similiar to hunt anything up to elephants. If you get a 450 Marlin the only load I am aware of is the powerful offering from Hornady. Otherwise, you have to handload for whitetail type loads....
45-70 is just more versatile for non handloaders and can do everything the 450 can do if you do handload....plus components and factory rounds are much easier to find. Just make sure and buy a rifle with a strong action like the Marlin 1895

I don't have a 45/70 big but in my Hodgdon #27 manual, the loads listed for the 45/70 modern rifle meet or exceeds the published data on Hodgdonns web site for the 450 marlin.
