Remington 700 Accidental Discharges

I am pretty sure everyone is familiar with the 700 and its propensity to accidentally discharge when switching from safe to fire. My question is if I buy another aftermarket trigger Timney,Shilen,Jewell etc etc can the gun still accidentally discharge after replacing the stock trigger.?

I believe any of these safeties that doesn't block a firing pin completely can accidently let the hammer go. I think the remington issue was the gunk that builds up was causeing the safety switch to push down on the sear.

They have to all have a very similiar mechanism which should produce the same results if gunk is allowed in there. I guess if I build another 700 I will have to put a M70 type safety on it. BTW since JamesB never has problems with his 700's this post doesn't apply to him

The problem with the safety has come up more then once and I was just wondering, does this apply to the new Remingtons or the old ones? I have a Remington 700 rifle that I purchased in the late 70"™s and have never had this problem.

Oh man, I was betting it was going to take him only 4 hours or less to sniff out somebody was busting on old green for him to post a reply that there's no need to replace a remington trigger and he has had 500 without failure.

If you have a Remington 700 that is discharging when the safety is disengaged you should take it to a competent gunsmith or sent back to Remington to correct the problem. Someone has been dicking with the trigger settings to a point where the firearm is unsafe.[:-]

Actually only happened once and it was with a 1972 700 ADL in 25-06 and it went off when the safety was released. Trigger pulls were excellent on any new Remington back then and the trigger was "as is" from the factory.

Well all I can say is that my rifle has never been to a gunsmith to adjust the trigger and I"™ve always been pleased with it since the day I bought it.

It happened to me once. My brother in law took the safety off of a 700 BDL 30-06 and darn near took my head off with it. He swears up and down he never touched the trigger. That was after he picked himself up following a punch to the nose. To this day I won't hunt with him. You mean he wasn't lying?

I am sure that is the case but since my incident I have never really trusted that safety mechanism and judging by the wording and instructions in the user manual neither does the manufacturer. I am sure they fixed it now with the recall and the bolt "Unlock" with safety on feature.
