Thinking about that perfect deer cartridge, and got to thinking (there I go again [&:]) about the 338-06 (A-Square). Recently standardized, seems like this could be it.
Would make a great deer cartridge, and a good one for larger game such as elk & moose too. Good range of bullet weights available, and good sectional densities too.
Seems like it would be a good one for anything in NA, decent trajectories, and with moderate recoil as well. Now if we could just get the majors to make the rifles & ammo.
Opinions/thoughts???
I don't have any practical experience with the .338-06, but I agree you both of you. The .30-06 is a great overall deer cartridge, but I'm sure some would prefer a little more for the heavier ungulates like moose. I'm not into magnums for the same reason I'm not into sports cars. They look nice in the driveway, but they're more power than most of us would like to have on a regular basis, and they cost a lot to operate.
Just in case the guy with the 300 H&H doesn't come thru I have plan b in effect. That would be buying an FN mauser and having it chambered in either 30-06,280, 338-06,35whelen or 35 whelen AI. I just can't make up my mind on this one it is tough..All of them are good choices for the action just cannot make up my mind. I really don't want to take that FN to a gunsmith and have him work it for a regular magnum cartridge.
