Went and shot the 540XR.Does pretty dang good.BUT I need some help on the sights It has a williams peep on the back ,and a Globe of unknown origin on the front.I would like to change the inserts but I can not find the right size.The williams are to big and the Lymans are to small.Does anybody know how to measure so I would know what size front to get or would you suggest in maybe a new set front and rear.Maybe some anshutz or williams olympic or if anybody knows of another good brand ?

I'm sorry, but I don't know what a "540XR" is. Nevertheless, my suggestion would be a Lyman receiver sight (for the back)...with an appropriate globe (front) sight. The Lymans are well-made, with good adjustments, yet are not as expensive as many brands (such as Anshutz) - yet, much better quality, IMO, than any Williams sight. I apologize if this suggestion is non-sequitor.... as I said, I don't know what a 540XR is....therefore, I have no idea whether Lyman makes a sight to fit it.

gorse,Thanks for the reply.The 540X and the 540XR were target rifles made by Remington years ago they are single shot bolt action with very heavy barrels.They came with adjustable stocks,hand stop,and elbow sling.They look kinda like something for Biathalon (sp.)I believe the 540X is a little bit more expensive than the 540XR.From what I've been told over the years anything from Reminton with the "X" designation was supposed to be somewhat better quality. If anybody knows more about these rifles I sure would like to hear from you.
