Just opinions guys...
If the 270 and the 280 had been introduced at similar times, loaded to similar pressures, and each in an appropriate bolt action rifle, which would have been the most widely used cartridge. I know, it's pure speculation, but I'd honestly like to hear your opinions. But please, leave out comparisons to the 243.

Well if Jack O' connor had never existed and Remington had not confused everyone with the 7mm express and not pushed it into 742's and 7400's and lowered its factory pressures and done a better job of marketing it. Plain and simple the 280 would have been more popular. It is a little more cartridge then a 270/150grain vs 7mm/160 but it really takes over when shooting 175 grain bullets. Remington really screwed the pooch on this one and has really done it with a number of other cartridges.

BC,
No, I wasn't kidding. I know what my opinion is, just wanted to hear everyone elses. I love the 280 and the 270, but I beleive that if introduced simultaneously the 270 would only have a cult following.

I have to agree with everybody else on this one. 007in. aint much difference but the small difference in bullet weight is what makes it for me. I shoot a 280 and my brother shoots a 270 and we've been arguing this one for years.
Ain't got one ........... yet. Got a 270Win. (Rem.700LSS Mtn. rifle)
One day I'll get that 280Rem., when I figure out what rifle I want it chambered in[]
(Another Rem. Mountain rifle or maybe a Ruger, or .....???)
I would take this question one step farther. What if a .270 were given a 1 in 8 in twist so it would stablize 170 grain spitzers, which would be more popular? I think the only advantage the .280 has is the heavier bullets everything else is a wash. Both are excellent cartridges and the .280 doesn't give up much to the 7mm Rem Mag. A 140/130 grain bullet (depending on which you are shooting) at 3000 fps is an excellent round for just about any deer hunting.
