In a nut shell the selector switch disables the disconnector.

In a normal gun the hammer falls, the gun fires and it cycles rearward. The hammer gets recocked on the sear but trigger stays disconnected from the sear until you release the trigger allowing it to reconnect for another pull of the trigger.

Take a semiauto gun of some kind and dry fire it. While still holding back the trigger cycle the action and let it go forward and lock up. Now release the trigger and you will hear a click. That is the trigger reconnecting to the sear.

If a fully auto rifle the disconnector is either gone or disables through a selector switch.

If you have ever shot a Winchester model 12 it did not have a disconnector. So the hammer engaged the sear but as soon as the bolt was locked up it would fire if you held the trigger (slam fire). If it were a self cycling gun, like a semi auto, it would be fully auto. It is essentially fully auto but powered by your arm instead of internal springs.

IN CASE YOU DID NOT KNOW.
It IS ILLEGAL TO CONVERT A FIREARM TO FULL AUTO! DON'T DO IT!

In the case of the M-16 and most class III weapons, there is more to the full auto setup than disabling the disconnector of the semi auto version. An AR-15, for instance, can fire full auto if you simply remove the disconnector - assuming it has a shrouded bolt carrier an/or an M-16 hammer. But the cycling is not reliable and may not work at all if the rounds have hard primers. An M-16 selector, when rolled forward, pulls the disconnector back where it no longer works; and allows the auto sear to hold the hammer back when the trigger is held to the rear. As the bolt closes, the step at the bottom of the bolt carrier bumps the auto sear in the last 1/8" of its travel - sending the hammer home on the firing pin just as the bolt locks up. This is a reliable operation and has an optimum cyclic rate for the weapons system.
