Default Pistol recommendations

Dear handgun enthusiasts,
I have recently completed my training for my CPL in Michigan...and am going to be shopping for a medium sized pistol for self defense. I am not currently concerned about getting something real tiny...I already have a fairly small Makarov 6 shot that will fit the bill for that....
But I'm wanting to buy a RELIABLE, great pointing and comfortable 9mm and a 45.
What suggestions do you all have for a medium sized 9mm and medium sized 45 that is comfortable and reliable. Pretty is not important.
So far I have fired Glocks, Kimbers (full size though), Rugers (90's - 97's)
and I was extremely impressed with a Star (9mm Spanish)...was really comfortable in my hand.
I intend to get quite proficient and so will be putting plenty of rounds through whatever I choose.
Your thoughts and suggestions are welcomed.

8mm your on the right track. Go out and shoot a few models to get the feel and how a particular firearm reacts. My personal preference is the H&K or Kimber.

8mm06,
I also like a Kimber, but the Sig P220 is also a fine .45. If I was looking to get a 9mm and a 45 I would be tempted to buy Sigs for both calibers.

Glock 19 (9mm)
H&K USP-Compact (9mm or .45)

IMO, I think these fit the bill for being medium sized, great pointing, comfortable, and ultra-reliable.

About all the pistols these days from the big manufactures are reliable for home protection. So I wouldn't worry too much about that. Really what you are going to get here is more personal preference to "this is the gun I bought so you should buy one". For instance, I don't keep a semi for self defense. Thru personal experence and preference, I only have a mod 29 or mod 13 (wheelgun) beside my bed. Now, alot of people want the semis. Thats fine, but have taught too many people (usually females) to shoot them to see them very uncomfortable with all the gadgets and safeties, and complications. So I never recommend them.

Also, there is distinct group on here of 1911 lovers. Me being one of them. But don't recommend one for a new owner. Rather complicated to take apart compared to a sig, or berretta. Very heavy slide pull. Wonderful war pistol, just last thing I would recommend to someone just getting into it.

I personally like the Sigs and H&Ks the best, but Ruger makes a very good gun for the money. Kimber makes an excellent gun too but I prefer double action guns for concealed carry.

Ruger's new 345 looks good in pictures and print, but I haven't seen one yet.

If it is a six shot, it isn't a Mak, even though it might be chambered in 9x18. Maks hold 8+1. One of the alloy frame Polish pistols? You might even look at an actual Makarov, and have common ammunition.

For CCW use I'd suggest you check out the following;

9mm: Sig 239 (8shot mag.) or model 229 (10shot/double stack mag.)

Another good little 9mm is the S&W model 908 or 908S (stainless), and the 3913.
H&K, Ruger, Baretta, etc., etc., all make good pistols. You really just have to check 'em
out, and see what feels best to you, and is within your budget. I like the Sig 239 as for me, it "fits". It has also proved to be a very accurate and reliable pistol.

45ACP: Take a look at the Sig220, and the Baretta Cougar. A friend of mine has the
Cougar, and it's a good quality, reliable, and accurate firearm.

Thanks for all replies so far. Money is a bit of a problem so I will be waiting to purchase for a little bit but want to start trying out some handguns at some of the "rent'n'shoot" shops in my area as well as bug some of my buddies with pistols on my list. It's nice to get info from those that have already "been there". I realize that the ultimate choice will be a personal one that will account for my hand size and personal preferences...I have a couple decent wheel guns but both have 6" barrels for hunting, and I only have 2 semi-autos that I feel are problem free enough for defensive use. My one semi auto that could fit the bill for a medium sized pistol is chambered in 9x18 and I'd rather go with 9 x 19 or 45.
Keep you suggestions and personal preferences flowing....
And Charley.....

Charley,....Yes, you're right,... my 6 shot is an FEG Model SMC in 9x18....a nice little gun but not a real Makarov......I do have a few of the real deals but with their "European" mag release they are not as nimble for self defense. So I'm shopping!

SpringField Armory XD-Model pistols in 9mm or 40-s&w are a good pick.
SpringField Armory also makes a rock solid 45.
