Default Savage .17 HMR, just got one..have some questions!

I just got a savage 17 HMR, heavy barrel, synthetic stock, and I was wondering what as far as group size I should ecspect, I've been told that this is an extremely accurate caliber (dime size groups at 200yrds) I find that hard to believe though. And is this the kind of gun that you should be cleaning all the time?(50, 100, 200rnds...how often to maintain good accuracy?) I know nothing about this particular caliber any other info would be nice to..

they are accurate but dont exspect dime at 200 yards. you should be able to get sub MOA at 100 yards. as far as cleaning give it a good clean job to start with, and i cleaned mine after the next 50 rounds. but after that shoot untill the accuracy drops off, for alot of people that 250+ rounds.
the reason people get such great groups with these guns is because alot of people put 16+ power scope on them and use bench rests. i can cover 5 shots witha dime at 50 yards with a 12x scope and bipods. at 75 yards i can get about the same. i havnt shot targets past that but i have hit a gopher at 155 yards. mines a marlin but they have similar accuracy. www.rimfirecentral.com has lots of info on the 17hmr.

I have a Savage 93R17 FVSS with a Bushnell 6-18 x40mm scope and I"m sure not getting any 1" groups at 100 yards yet. I"ve only tried Hornady Express so far but will have to experiments with other brands to see if I could improve on my groups. I really can"t see getting dime size groups at 200 yards as you mentioned with my setup. As for cleaning, I"ll see how it goes if my groups don"t improve with other bullets. Good luck with your new rifle. Hope you enjoy it.

with mine i get quarter size groups at 100 yards, who ever told you dime size groups at 200 yards is a crack smoker.

i don't really care much for the .17 hmr. but if someone has one that would shoot dime size groups at 200 i would even consider that one.

GorV I have a sporter barrel 93 in 17 HMR. I could consistantly shoot 1/2" five shot groups at 50 yds using Remington Premier 17 HMR ammo. That was with the heavy factory trigger. I have since replace the trigger with a Rifle Basix trigger. Can't wait to see what it does now. I tried to download a target to show you but it tells me the file is too large.
Oh, and by the way, with this same ammo, I took a nice gobbler last fall. I shot him at the point where the neck meets the body. Took him down cleanly at I estimate about 65 yds.
