Default Rust on barrel

My grandfathers neighbor just gave him a stevens-savage 887 22lr semi-auto rifle with a tube magazine. My grandfather tried it the other day and it was misfirring and jamming. He allready has more guns than he needs so he gave it to me. Apon inspection I have come to the conclusion that this gun was never cleaned. I broke the rifle down and lookwd down the barrel and all the rifleing looks fine and there wasn't any rust. I soaked all the parts in a solvent let then dry oiled and put it back together and it and the action is much better. My question is how do I remove surface rust from metal parts and reblue. Any help would be appreciated thanks. Oh, does anyone own this gun and how many rounds will it hold. Thanks

You use steel wool to remove surface rust. First start out with the finer wool, like 0000 then if you need work your way up to 00 steel wool. To re-blue they sell kits but you can have a gunsmith do it for you if you want it to look nice.

I was bear hunting on the Alaska Peninsula one time, and a group of 3 hunters came along. The high winds and rain the night before had destroyed there tent & camp, and one guy was shakeing badly from hypothermia (sp?) even after walking about three miles to my camp!!! I was in a broken down shack with 2 other hunters, and we allowed them to move in with us as long as they stayed out of our way.

A couple days later one of the guys was in tears (literally) about the Win. model 12 shotgun he had along that "grandpa" had given him, as it was a ball of rust!

I took a small crumpled up piece of amuminum foil about the size of a large marble and dipped it in bacon grease, (any gun oil will work) handed it to him and told him to get after it!! They all thought i was nuts, but soon he was scrubbing the hell out of it, getting every bit of the rust off it!!! He was one happy camper after learning that one!!! And, NO it doesn't hurt the blueing if used with any care at all.

Fine steel wool and oil should remove most surface rust. You can get home blueing kits from Brownells - without knowing how much rust you've got it's difficult to tell you what to use.
