Default What kind of bait and hook to use?

I will be fishing for catfish in the red river where it is very murky and the water is probably 15-20 ft deep not really much of an expert on fishing so i was wondering what type of lure and bait would be good? thanks.

Im no expert by a long shot- but worms, night crawlers , cut up chucks of fish, beef, chicken livers etc should catch some on any good size bait hook or you could use a treble hook( but harder to get out- but holds the bait bettertoo)

well if you have some stinkbait, use some rubberstinkbait worms and cover them in stinkbait. or try cutting up jumbo chubs into 4 pieces and put a piece on a treble hook and toss it in the water.

get yourself a pair of pantyhose and cut a piece off. then get some chickenlivers and wrap the piece of pantyhose around it then put it on a big treble hook. the pantyhose keeps the bait on and the oils of the bait will soak through the pantyhose. thats how we catch some monster blue cats on the rapahanok. shrimp seems to work good as well but theres nothing like the chicken livers.

I hear the red is the best destination going for big cats.....from what I have read, use larger live minnows for flatheads up there and the liver idea is also a good one.

I have seen on fishing shows where they throw dry dog food in the water where they are
going to fish about 8 hours before the are going to fish.

Jimmy Houston used hog pellets.

I have had people tell me they use cheap cand of dog food and
punch holes in the cans and throw them in the water.
I wouldn't do this because you could get a fine for littering.

I think I will try it.

I hope this helps.
Good Luck.

i hate catfish but when i use to fish for them (last summer) i used crayfish with weight and they just eat them up but they like the smaller ones i caught them by looking on the bank in the shallow water or go on a dock on the shore and at night or evening cut a minnow and drop it in the water and then clamup on to it so check it every few seconds but i hate catfish now and i hope i never catch one again.

i love to catfish and i catch alot by using trebels they are better that regular but you will lose them more because the fish swallow them alot. Then just put some chicken liver on and fish on the bottom not with a cork. and good luck
