Default Steering cable problem~~~ I need help!

I neep help with my steering cable. I cant move it unless I beat on it with a hammer. Its a stick steering set up. 13 ft. long, made by EZ Glide or something like that. I looked up boat steering cables on the net and it looks like 150 bucks to replace it.

I unhooked it from the motor and the boat and then took off the handle and also took it off the wheel. The cable was stiff as a board, so worked it for a while trying to make it more flexable to see if that was it and nothing different. Still wont budge unless its beat with a hammer.

Can I free it up or not? Will using the hammer to beat it back and forth free it up if I keep doing it?

Any help would be gretaful. I do not have the money to buy a new one, and our camping/fishing trip is coming up soon for Memorial Day. And I'm trying to get it ready for the family outing.
