RE: how many people have lost something down an ice fishiong hole?
I just remembered this one. We drove 55 miles to this lake by snowmachine in late March for some late season specks. Of course, by then theres about 3 1/2 ft of ice. We had one of those old spoon augers that took a bit of beating on the back of the sled on the way to the lake. When we started cutting it wouldn't do diddly. So we tried sharpening with a nail and then continued to work our first hole. After about 1/2 hr of struggling and about a gallon of sweat each we just broke through the bottom of the ice. Well you know that little lip of ice you have to break cleanly off at the bottom of the hole, well, I gave it just one little exta twist and the spoon broke clean off and fluttered to the bottom. That was the end of the trip so it was pack everything back up and head home. Actually, that was the best thing that happened to that auger. We went out next day and bought a Jiffy.
