Default Fun weekend.....with some firsts

Started out the Saturday with my first-ver smallmouth fishing trip. We fished a very small creek thats feeds off the TN river here in North AL.
It didn't take long to score my first ever (on any tackle), albeit small, smallmouth!

I got a little bigger one a few casts later....

Nice colors on this one...

I did wind up hooking a 4lber but lost it as I was way too impatient and tried to horse it in. I am going back this Saturday on a mission to catch him again for a re-match.

Then I head a few miles north just across the border into TN. This was my first fly fishing trip for trout. I had a lot to learn, first time nymphing, mending, etc. So needless to say, the fishing was slow for me. But at least I wasn't skunked!
Elk River, TN

First moving water rainbow on the fly!

Super little brown, but first ever on fly....

Spent a lot of time doing this, trying to find something that worked for me....

Awesome photos.

I love catching smallies with my fly rod. What fly did you catch those smallmouth on?

Thanks! I am going back Saturday morning to try the same smallmouth creek and possibly a new one that afternoon. Then Sunday I am headed to Wilson Lake (Smallie heaven) in Florence, AL to fish for smallies hopefully during a mayfly hatch. Then Sunday afternoon heading back to TN with a different guy that supposedly knows where the browns are in that river. Another fishing filled weekend, but that's the way I like 'em!

I caught them all on what is called "the one bug." I went fishing with the son of the man who created the fly. He was nice enough to give me several and put me on some fish. A day I'll never forget for sure. This is the bug:

did you end up catching a lot of bluegill? It seems like most times I take out a popper like that I end up catching more bluegill and rock bass then smallmouth.

Actually I didn't catch too many. I targeted the current and boulders more. I would say it was about half and half, with a slight edge to more smallies. I am thinking about trying a crawfish pattern, or a brown wooly bugger Saturday in some of the deeper pools

Great looking fish and surroundings! Hopefully you catch a lot this saturday. Though I dont tie my own flies, and am an amateur by all means of the word, the links to that fly are great and very helpful.
