Default White River in AR trip

Just got back from a quick weekend trip over to the White River in AR. I have been dying to catch a brown trout for a year or so now and me and a buddy finally went. I caught the biggest fish of the day at 5.1 lbs! It was an awesome trip and I can't wait to go back!

I am glad you had a grea time of it as well. What did you use for a rod? Fly rod or a spinning rod? Either way as long as it was an enjoyable trip it doen't really matter.

Congrats!

Nice Brown, love it when they have have shoulders on them. Sure can tug when they put their noses down in that current.

What was your setup?

Thanks for the replies guys. It was an amazing trip and brown trout are among my favorites in freshwater now! Wish I didn't have to go so far to catch 'em! They were a very nice pull, witht he 5lber taking around 5 min to bring in. They were on light 6' rods, with 6lb test line and a live shiner minnow.

How did you fish the minnow? Under a float, drifting, back trolling?

A lot like a catfish rig, had an egg sinker (not sure what size) with about 14-16" of leader with a (i think) #4 hook in the tail. If the minnow was alive, it was free-lined, and if dead it was tight lined. Waited for the good pull and quick hook set. The water was extremely low, which had it been higher the fishing would have been even better so we were told. As it was, we caught around 20 browns, with 3 over 4 lbs (4.2, 4.7, 5.1). I can't imagine what a good day would be like if that was a bad one! They seemed to prefer the dead minnows over the live ones. It was an awesome trip and I can't wait to go back. Maybe next time I can target some of the biger rainbows. We caught around 40 of those, but could only keep 5 per person. None were "monsters" but they will eat good nonetheless! I am curious to know how you fish for brown bh14. I think you do it quite a bit right?

I catch a few browns, really depends on the river systems on how or what I fish them with.

When fishing for Steelhead (andramanous Rainbow Trout) we catch them on spawn, generally in large rivers (float and drifting).

When fishing small undercut creeks and rivers, we catch them on spinners, nightcrawlers, and rapalas (casting and retrieving).

Some guys in big rivers backtroll with plugs (hot-n-tots, rapalas, etc).

They are also caught in Lake Michigan on spoons and plugs.

I personally know this fellow. He caught the state (possibly the world) record Brown Trout last year. He lives 10 miles from me.
