Default Reel Repair

Hey guy's,I have an old Shimano Bantam Black Mag bait caster reel that I have had forever.Needs some work .I don't think it is anything major. When you push the button to cast sometimes it does not re-engage as soon as you turn the handle .Know of anybody that can work on these reels .Been a goodun.Want to keep it around .Like the flipping feature on it.........Thanks Alton

That is a minor problem...somehow ya need to oil the 2 springs that engage that..

The magor problem is taking it apart..I believe you can oil that mechanism without disassembling the reel..when you push the button note the little hole or slot..to the right of your reel...shoot some reel oil or gun oil in there..and then work the reel so the oil is spread out good..
I've had a few reels do that..

I had one rod my son reeled in from off the bottom of the lake..I took it all apart and put it back to gether,,worked great..THEN..I've had some and was over confident..and messed the reel up..SO if ya ever do take one apart...memorize where EVERY part goes..becasue down to the smallest flat washer makes a huge difference.

Most reels have 2 main screws in which the entire right side comes off...then you can see all the little springs and shoot some reel oil..DON'T use any oil heavier than reel oil..another lesson learned.I've taken many apart..some success stories and some not.

LOL .Chuck ,Have taken a few apart myself with the same results. Some good some bad .The main problem is when I cut my hand almost off a few years back I don't have the dexterity to fiddle with the small stuff anymore. Can barely pick up a nickle with that hand .Kinda scared to try.Don't want to mess it up and not get it back together.Tried the oil, did help a little but did not fix the problem.Shoot 'bout all I can tie know is a palomar knot.

I'm really sorry to hear about your hand..that is terrible..then you are aware of the make up of the baitcaster..

The most problem I've had with them wasn't the springs and tiny stuff..it was assembling the drag and crank back..which would appear on the surface to be the easiest step..If I was an expert I'd fix your reel for free..but I'm not..I'm about 50/50 LOL and the main reason I don't take my nice ones apart.

Possible you have a part worn out..or a spring that is worn.I just got done getting my 11 bass rods ready..actually Matt owns 3 of them..we share. I took Power Pro 20# off of most of them and will mostly use 12 pound Trilene this year..the only ones i still use braid are with the jig and horny Toad

10 pound is too light for our Florida structure..and even 12 pound..you better know your rod and drag real good.

Again..sorry about that hand of yours..is there any chance it will get better?

Thanks Chuck, I had an accident at work back in 2002 .Cut across the wrist on sheet metal .Cut everything ulnar nerves ,arteries,.Had 4 operations at Duke .Totaled about 40+ hrs. of microscopic surgery.Probally as good as it's gonna get.At least I am left handed and cut the right.Just got back to where I can pull back a bow last year.No feelings from middle of Ring finger all the way to pinkie. They don't really straighten out on their own.Just got to live with it and drive on.Used to be a pretty good tig pipe welder, now can't feel the wire. Can still tig some but not good enough to weld pipe (Boiler tubes ,high pressure steam) anymore .Can still fit pipe when there is work which has been pretty slack aound here for a while.Do mostly power plant outages.Mostly supervision .Sometimes on my tools if have to.Wonder how bad Bass Pro or Cabelas will give me the horn.

That would be rough..I guess I need to thank the Lord more often for my hands..Sometimes we take out body parts for granted..Your attitude is commendable.
