I went out to a small lake on lunch today and fished some from the bank. I could see bass between 6-10 inches in small groups, within 3-4 feet of the bank, in water that was maybe 1.5 feet and very clear. They would just swim in a little groups, sit still for a while, then move a little bit more before staying still again. Occasionally one would rub his side on the bottom then straighten up and rejoin ranks. I buzzed a frog right over two groups and they didnt budge. I saw brim swimming around them and saw one bass move slightly foward toward the brim, so I hooked up a brim crank and ran it right above them and then right beside them, nothing. Two of them very slightly turned in place to look at the crank, but didnt come after it in the slightest. It was 90 degrees outside today, on the tail end of a front, mostly cloudy, and they were in the shallows with no shade around. The floor is silty, so anytime i ran the crank to the bottom, it dug up clouds of silt.
It was a very interesting experience for me, and an aggrevating one as well. To be able to see the fish, but unable to figure out how to catch them, was a hard pill to swallow.
Any thoughts on what was going on? Why the fish were out in the open, in groups, but primarily stationary and not eating?
