I like 1/8 ounce jig heads in chartreuse with a 4" single tail white grub like a Mr. Twister. Throw them out and crank them back and the smallies love them especially when they are in shallow water. I just got back and fished for about 1/2 hour and caught 8 but they weren't big ones.

Too busy with fishing to spend much time here.
My # 1 smallmouth lure is a small ( 1/16 or 1/8 oz.) hair jig, either black or dark brown... In order to fish this lure effectively, you must use light spinning gear with 4 or 6 lb. test... I make my own jigs...
Another universally effective lure is a 3" or 4" twister tail grub on a 1/8 oz. jighead..I prefer dark colors such as pumpkinseed or motor oil, but have also done well at times on white and yellow..
If you fish natural baits, the best I have ever used are hellgramites and stone catfish locally known as "tonies"...Thread the hellgramites on a jighead as you would a twister tail, and hook the stone cats through the lips with a single hook...
Other good baits are 3-4" minnows such as shiners, and nigtcrawlers.. With the crawlers, hook the worm once through the head, rather than gobbing on the hook as you would for panfish or catfish...
Leeches also work well if you can get them in your area...
I've done well on river smallies with 3" black Berkley GULP leeches drited in the current on a light jighead..
1/8 oz leadhead jig, push it up into the tube. get a lot of tubes and jigs, fish them on the bottom.. you'll loose a lot, but you'll catch so many smallies your arms will be tired.

I bet your fishing the Small Mouth Capitol of the World (or near there)! The Potomac River. I loved my crayfish lures in your area. I'm not surpised this is working for you. I need to take my boy up there for a few days to enjoy what I had for many years.
