The heavist stuff cast the best..but I use what works best for me..so I cast light stuff..

Does it effect distance? yep...but there are things you can do..Some worms are heavier than others.Culpret worms are kind of heavy ..so I use a round BB split shot with a 7 1/2 inch Culpret worm ..I can zing it out about 20 yds..with no backlashes
Our lakes have had TONS of pressure so all my fishing is finesse/light fishing.
This is about the same distance with all my personal baitcasters..

Jig..ALWAYS 3/16 baitcaster

Spinner Bait..mostly 3/16 baitcaster

Hornytoad weighs about 1/2 ounce..he sails about 40 yards..LOL baitcaster

NOW..I've had some expensive baitcasters that would not cast 3/16 weight..too light ..they immediately were returned back to Walmart.

like chuck mentioned heavier is easier to control

jigs:

1/2oz for flipping and picthin
3/4-1 1/4 for heavy matted grass

worms:

3/16-3/4 depending on cover and rate of fall i'm looking for, i will drop down to a 1/8oz on a big worm to "swim it"

plugs:

1/4-1-1/2

in most cases a heavy bait will cast best to a point, but a big bladed spinner-bait will grab the wind like nobody's business

the rule of thumb for me is if its under 3/8oz its on the spinning rod though some frogs that are light i can cast on my baitcaster
