I checked out the new spot on lunch today with my coworker, and we took 4 of my rods and reels out there with is: 1 with a ZOOM horny toad, 1 with a Rebel minnow, one with a Rattlin Chug Bug, and one with a Senko hooked wacky style. We only had 45 minutes on the water, and it was from 12pm-1pm with 100 degree heat. I started out with the Horny Toad and he with a Senko rigged wacky style. Neither of us got any hits in the first 30 minutes. I decided to move the boat to the other end of the lake where the creek runs into it and it turned out to be a good move. I cast the horny toad under a low lying tree branch where the water was covered with shade and started my retrieve. As soon as it passed over an underwater branch, I saw a flash of gold dissapear with my lure. I yanked back and set the hook hard. With my Abu set to maximum drag and spooled with braid, the fight was good but short. I got him to the boat and lifted him out of the water with my rod because I didnt have a net with me, and as soon as I hoisted him to put him in the boat, he shook like crazy and I saw the hook rip out of the side of his mouth. DANG. He was a really nice fish, not long but very fat. I believe I can conservatively estimate him to be about 2.5 lbs, but thats an assumption, and we all know what assumptions are like

. I was using some mustad hooks and the hooks held up fine, but the Horny Toad got all kinds of tore up and so I discarded him. My buddy is a beginner fisherman, and has not fished since he was a young boy, so this was the first time has fished in a rather long time. He was having zero luck with the Senko, so i gave him the old faithful Rebel minnow to try out. I picked up the Rattlin Chug Bug and gave it a whirl. On his third cast with the minnow, he hooked into his first ever Large Mouth Bass, and with my ultra light spinning rod and reel, haha. The fight was on and it was actually a pretty decent fight. It could have lasted 10 seconds for all I know, but the rod and reel setup couldnt handle it. Eventually, the bass popped off, but not before coming to the surface to let us get a look at him. He was a decent size, maybe 12-14 inches, with a nice fat belly on him. But more important than his size, was the fact that my friend caught his first LMB and he is now hooked. I continued throwing the Rattling Chug Bug but came up empty handed. He cast out the rebel minnow a few more times, eventually landing a small but healthy perch, and we called it a lunch, hehe.
So 45 minutes of fishing produced 2 nice bass and a perch. Granted all three fish came on my two favorite lures, I still will not give up on the others, and hopefully I can find a new lure to go with my current two favorites.
best of luck fishing guys!
