For a pond....2 worms on a hook..a BB split shot about 10 inches above the worm..cast where you think they are...
Actually rig about 3 rods like that..use no bobber..prop the rods on some forked sticks..abd wait...and wait and wait.[8D]
Watch the line..you will get one pull...
I'd use a medium rod 6 1/2 foot 10 pound test for Ohio..
They feed best at night.. but evenings and mornings are good too.

For cats I usually fish off the bank, deadline with live or cut bait. I like to use what use to be my old muskie rods and reels. Garcia 6500 C3's with 20lb mono (trilene XL) and Berkely Technique rods, heavy action, 5'10" (I beleive it's a heavy jerkbait rod; fairly short and stout with a long casting handle). This setup doesn't seem to be popular but it works great for me.

10lb test in Ohio for bass is fine; however IMO it's far from optimal for catfish. I use 20lb on mine because I can get a TON of line on my reels and know I have a great working drag. If you want to be prepared for what you may hook I would suggest thinking in the 40-70lbs MAX weight range for the fish. Yes, you could get by with 10lb test and I would suggest you go that route if you are the type of person who prefers to fish for Florida bass with ultralight gear only.
