Generally the rule is dark baits on dark days and light baits on light days, but I caught a 10lber on a black 8 inch work on a day without a cloud in the sky. I fish mostly soft plastics, and I think that you need a couple baits in five categories. Mostly white, Mostly black, Neutral, Flash, and shock colors.
Mostly white and mostly black explain themselves. Neutral can be tan, translucent, smoke, and amber. Flash colors are the metal colors, silver, gold, copper. Bold or shock colors are the electric greens, oranges, chartreuse, yellow, pink, and fire tiger. If you have a couple baits in each color you can follow the basic rules, and if they don' t work you can just go through the five color groups chances are you will find what the fish are looking for. Don' t forget scent and sound the other important factors. Hope this helps some.

brice, mharris gave you some ideas. My color selection will also depend on water color (clarity) alot. But, give me a black/blue jig n pig anywhere, cloudy or not.

Basserman is definitely right. Water clarity is very important. When It is stained or murky I use either black or some of the shock colors. If the water is clear I use a more lifelike color combinations. There are some great articles on the web, and I subscibe to Bassin' magazine, which has some great tips in it. Good luck.

Dark water, dark lure, rattles. Clear water light, bright lures no rattles.
Clear days crank or spinners. Cloudy worms, jigs and rattles.
But me WHAT EVER THEY WILL HIT!
