Default Ice is Finally Melting...

But after the winter we have had (Ice and then tons of snow), the news keeps reporting an extremely high incidence of fish kill. Haven't been able to put any bait in the water yet, but it's not looking good after no success of ice fishing this year. I keep hoping it was bad timing, but I keep getting the willies when I think about it.

Most of it is still all locked up here on Champlain. It is getting bad around the shore and the pressure cracks are getting huge. I figure we have about 10 days left on the broad lake and 2 weeks on the sheltered bays. A buddy dropped his truck in partially this morning trying toget off after I suggested he go with his wheeler. The wind was blowing about 30 to 40 with temps in the teens and he wanted the heated truck to sit behind and keep warm. Bad choice. I decided at 6:30 am to stay off and took my wheeler home but not after watching him take his new dodge out and vanish in the whiteout.

We still have alot of ice here, the place I have been fishing has almost 3 feet still on it. Some of the channels have been opening up as they have started dropping the lakes down getting ready for the run off from melting snow. So like C.I. some lakes the shore lines are starting to melt while on the bigger lakes with the water dropping the shore lines are still pretty darn thick. Also with dropping of the water the pressure ridges are shooting upwards almost daily. Those areas I preffer to stay away from. Ice fishing ends here on March 31st and open water will be a while yet..[:'(]

When we got home from church and Easter dinner the ice was finally gone! One of the smaller ponds didn't make it through the winter and has all the fish floating belly up, but the 7 acre pond is looking good and I sat here and watched ducks diving and catching fish so it seems to be okay.
