just buy them. Polar inulated ones. they stack nicely in a 5 gal paul, and never freeze in.

I agree with TeeJay 100%. They are like 10 bucks at the store, I know 10 bucks is a lot of money, specially to me. But by the time I would have the supplies and time into the tip-up I could have bought 4 from the store.

I use the polar tip-up as some state here, but they are not always that good. I have seen to many times fish running on them only to drop the hook on me. It is a pain sometimes to try and reset it to the depth you was originaly at. I make some out of wooden dowels and five will fit easily in a plasticgrocery bag. I will try and post a pic on one as well as how to make later on. Perhaps this evening if I can get the time for you.

To reset the depth, I put a tiny split shot on the line right below the spool. Easy as that, I dont know that could be more dificult. I dont know how cold it gets where you fish, but here in MN it will put a 1/2 inch of ice on the hole in a short short. The insulated ones wont freeze up.

We use buttons for the same purpose up here, but when they run out about a hundred feet of line it's a blast with all the line laying on the ice. I like to fish in some situations where the fish can not run the line out causing them to hook themselves when trying to run it out. Also you can see when they are just tapping at it rather thanhitting it hard. When they are just tapping you have the chance to tease them into biting.

Anyways here is whatI do to make one type of tip-up that works great on perch during the warm month of March up here. You do need to keep an eye on them more however. I take a 3/4 inch dowel that is 16 inches long and drill 2 holes threw it at 5 and 11 inches. At the 5 inch hole I put a 1/4 inch dowel threw it that is 14 inches long. At the 11 inch hole I put a 1/4 inch dowel threw it that is 6 1/2 inches long. I also put wood glue on it where the dowels go threw. Then you can either make a notch to hook your line on the end of it or put an eye hook on the end ofthe 3/4 inch dowel.( the end being theendtowards the 14 inch dowel going threw ) The 14 inch dowel is used as the pivet, which is layed over the hole. On the other end I paint it red and put a small orange flag on it.Here is a pic of one good luck..
