Default whos been buying new gear?

What have you all bought/or going to buy for this years fishing season.??

i recently got me a Abu Garcia"Revo SX" geared 6.4-1 spooled up with some 14lb stren HI-vis GOldand mated it up with a 6'6 MH Fenwick

havent used it fishing yet....but i tossed it quite a bit it the yard and the THing Pitches(Underhands) lures great...3/8ths ounce jig goes 25 yards no problem....wich is what i domostly all the time.

Took me a minute to get used to Casting it (side or over hand)....Spool spins very fast, very easy.....i had to tighten the spool quite a bit more than normal(normally i have very littletention onthe spool....but thisreel's spool spins so fast ihad to crank her down)for a few casts untill i got used to it.....i had to train my arm to slow down.....now i can cast the same distance as i could with my other poles with about half the effort. its nice, i'll recomend it, and its about time AbuGarcia did a Low Profile reel right.....now all they need to do is Release one with a 5.4-1 or 5.8-1 gear...wich is what i prefer over the high speed 6.4 or 7.0-1.

thats one thing i noticed in the last couple years is that Just about every low profile reel is "high speed"...they are nice but the gears arent as durable.

Default RE: whos been buying new gear?

I bought the same reel....cast nice ..and I've already caught lots of bass on it..I've got 20 pound Power Pro on mine .Teh reel is on a 7 foot Team Diawa..

I don't plan on buying anything else...maybe..another 103 Garcia spinning..
and maybe a hummingbird depth finder..maybe..

Do you play guitar?? I was looking at your avator..That is why I said maybe..I may take mymoney and get a D 28 Martin...real strong possibility..

Chuck

did you notice the same thing i did as far as spool speed/tention?
maybee its just me tho, all my gear is high quality but its very used....and not as smooth.

i Play...

i boughta Martin D-15 Mahogany top...bought it new in 02'.....its nice, and ugly too, I like the feel of the satin finish but some say it looks like Trash...personally i like it, the guitar is 6 years old and looks like its from the 50's or 60's already(worn spots in already thin finish)....its not as fancy as some other $700 foriegn guitars but its solid wood, american made and has lots of headroom, and will hold its value well.

with that being said if i was to get another Martin it would be a D-18 its the first model in the standard line so its cheaper than the 28 by $400 or so

the 28 has Rosewood Back/sides...so thats the main increase besides a few others. ...id go with a 18 over a 28.

butin the $2ooo+ retail range
id go with an american made Guild D-50 it retails about the same as a 18 and is nicer than the 28.

Not to split hairs but I thought you (chuck) just bought the Revo S. The SX has a few more bells and whistles. I was interested in one until I picked it up. Way to small for my hands.

Default RE: whos been buying new gear?

Chuck

did you notice the same thing i did as far as spool speed/tention?
It's your regular old Garcia there.gotta get the tension just right...I don't normally like Garcia..too heavy for me..but I do like the Revo..it's much lighter and built tough..I put it neck to neck with my old Quantum {Which was only 1/2 the price and is 7 years old} The cast the same distance..I do like th e 6.4 ratio..I was fishing inline spinners easily..I've heard good reports about the Revo and Wally stopped carrying the Quantum I use so I bought the Revo..I like it..nice reel.
maybee its just me tho, all my gear is high quality but its very used....and not as smooth. Well, the reel is the most I've paid for a reel..For the bucks ..you can't beat a Quantum..I think.

i Play...

i boughta Martin D-15 Mahogany top...bought it new in 02'.....its nice, and ugly too, I like the feel of the satin finish but some say it looks like Trash...Yep..I bought a D-1 satin finish...looks like trash..and hard ot keep clean BUT ..I stuck a bone saddle on..and sanded it down perfect. { You do know that you should be able to stick 2 dimes snuggly on top of each other at the 12th fret..} then it's just right..I sold it for 550.00 and could kick my own butt. It sounded perfect..My other guitar is an Ovation Elete ..1500.00 model..Sounds nice but not a Martin.

I've saved all year and took the 2300.00 to the guitar shop for a Herring bone D 28..It honestly didn't sound as good as the D 1 I sold fo r550.00 I about cried..model numbers aint everything.BIG MISTAKE [:@]

What kind of music do ya play?

How long ya been playing?

I've been playing since 1971..I also got a degree in music.. I play fast bluegrass for fun..regular and bluegrass gospel..I do play a few rock songs for fun ..such as.. Round About , ,Dust inthe Wind..stuff like that.not many ..just a few of the classics. I also fingerpick alot..hymns and folks songs..I know my scales and like playing minor and blues scales as well..I've got a cheap Yamaha electric and another acoustic as well...I'm thinking really serious about getting tht Martin..but to be honest with ya..it didd't sound like 2300.00 to me..
NOTE>>> the Ovation is perfect..the flaws is the photo..not the guitar..THe Martin is the D-1 I sold..very foolish choice I made.

Chuck

i started playing serious around the time that i bought the martin...

when i practice ill practice anything(mostly on acoustic).....Country, Jazz, Metal....but i like to play Jam/blues style music the most...Skynyrd, allman bros-minus the slide[&o], Zep, Mayall's Bluesbreakers....everyonce in a while some Beatles Helter Skelter/come togetheror some John Cash...

Been trying to play fingerstyle recently so icanFrankensteinsome old acoustic Blues but...im having a hard time without the Pick and the extra fingershaving a mind ofther own(im asouthpaw that plays Righty so that probably has some to do with it).....also i dont practice as much as i should.

Also the Action on my D-15 is high(probably 3 dimes)with Marquis mediums....i like it that way. Most complain about it being too hard to play but i dont have any problems and it sounds Better/and islouderthen Low and loose like most set theirs up(which i have a hard time adjusting to) ...

AHH..I play about 1 hour a day..I use to live by a bluegrass band that made records..I'd see the mandoline player play the same lick over and over again till he got it perfectly..I see that imagine alot..so i do the same..Play it over and over till it's played clean.

Also the Action on my D-15 is high(probably 3 dimes)with Marquis mediums....i like it that way. I bought another bone saddle off of ebay..25.00 sanded it down to 2 dimes.BINGO..perfect. I was hoping you were a bluegrass player so we could trade some tablature.. but that's ok..keep on pickin my man.

Check our rhese 3 Martin players..I think the guitar in the middle is a D 35..not enough Mother if Pearl for a D 45..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6s8Mmc69CP8

and check out this 00- 45 Martin from 1924..This is as good a sa guitar gets..
