id ask for a test drive, and be double sure the transom and stringers/floor isnt rotton.
also, go to wal mart, buy a $20 compression gauge. Run the motor on the water hose for 15 minutes or so, shut it down, pull all the plugs, open up the throttle the whole way, PULL THE KILL SWITCH, and do one plug hole at a time with the gauge. leave it hooked to the hose (you want motor lubricating the water pump everytime you touch the key), have someone turn the motor over a few seconds until you can get a reading. the actual numbers arent too important, as long as all 6 are within 5 - 10% of each other. This test will tell you if theres any immediate danger of the motor blowing, the health of the rings and cylinders.
