Default Whats better a hoop net or slat trap for catfish?

I am planning on setting either a hoop net or a slat trap and was wondering which will be better? It will be in a small creek maybe 3-16 feet deep. Also what is the best bait to use?

I think that hoop nets are better, especially for larger fish. I put a couple handfuls ofchicken guts or stink bait in a sock and tie it shut and then tie it into the rear compartment of the hoop net. Gets everything from catfish to snapping turtles.

Years ago my family had a camp on the Whisky Chitto not far south of you.

We were right on the Whiskey Chittoin the vicinity of Simmons Settlement, about where Highway 26 crosses the river.I would imagine some hoopnets in alittle bayou feeding into it would produce some nice catfish.Depending on what it looks like, you might go with some fresh cut up fish or mashed up crawfish in the sock and have a better chance of getting some big flatheads.

I am North of 26 and the Simmons settlement I can drive there in about 10 15 minutes, i have some friends that live down there. I am going to try some stinky cheese and see how that works for bait.

Do you know Peck or Junior down there? I'm not even sure that they are still alive, but the would be in their 60s now probably.

I can't remember where the church was. But, when you turn off of 26 to go into the settlement, you pass a small graveyard on the right. Peck lived not far down in a trailer on the right. Junior was a little further down on the right, and their mom lived in a house further down on the right. A wild bunch around there.

My dad's family is from down there and I have spent a lot of time down there off an on over the years. Junior had worked for my uncle on the tugboats and thru that connection we ended up buying the camp while i was going to LSU. But we got rid of the camp 15 years ago. When i go down there, i am usual around Jennings and Starks. I did go back up there about 6 or 7 years ago to do a canoe trip down the chitto.
