Hey hope i can get some answers from u guys! I am looking for books on what style flies for specific times of the year? Or maybe some of you guys can help i live in Md and am getting ready to tie some flies, but i was looking to tie some flies other then the usuall? Thanks guys! Ohh and im fishing for trout!
If you've got a fly shop locally, I'd stop by drop some chedder and have them tell me what works. Buy a few flies and go home and replicate them by the dozen.
If you lack a local store, Blue Ribbon Fly-Fishing Guides publishes guide books to Pennsylvania and Virginia that depending on the river drainages you plan to fishmay or may not be helpful.
You may also want to go back a couple of pages to the "What's in your fly vest?" post. Here's a link: http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=2073850
for this time of year i tend to use nypmhs or a fly with some lead in it to sink it down and i find the evil weevil and catatonic leech work by far the best this time of year for trout, but if water starts to get murky i like to use streamers more then later in summer and fall i tend to use the dry flies alot more. But if i were you tie some evil weevil and especially catatonic leeches i swear by them year round, never caught as many trout in one day as i have on them.
In this area early in the year small streamers and nymphs. Later on an alder fly then on to coachmans and mayflies. Later in the season it's hard to beat a grasshopper.
Here is one of the streamers I like to use for trout and landlocks. I have also caught bass, white perch, creek chubs, and almost any fish you can think of with it. I will use a small wet fly hook or streamer hook ( depending what I am using it for ) and tie on a small piece of golden pheasant tippet for a tail. I wrap the hook with silver tinsel, then tie in a little red died deer haip and top it off with a little white maribou. I then trim it so it looks even on the back end of it. If tied right it will look just like a little minnow swimming.
