I'm going fishing at a lake up in northern Michigan late next month. Everything I've been told about it leads me to believe it's going to be great fishing for smallies, walleye, panfish, and maybe pike. The lakes up there are notorious for being deep and crystal clear. I currently have 15 lb Trilene on my baitcaster, but I am really concerned about the visibility of the line. I'm thinking about spooling it with flurocarbon but I hate tying knots in the stuff and I wonder how well it works for crankbaits. From all the reports I've heard from guys who have been up there, I'll be doing a lot of jigging around rocks, so I wonder about its abrasion resistance. The only experience I have with this stuff is as leader material and I have heard as much bad as I have good. Anybody have any experience with flurocarbon, good or bad?
can't really remeber what kind of luck i had on the abrassion resistance but i can tell you this, the line does not do well if you ever have a bad back-lash with kinks in it, seems to be very brittle, also i have heard that people have had knot issues and braking off, i have heard it is very important with fluro to wet the knot completley before cinching it down.
all my personel experience with fluro has been berkley vanish, i am a big fan of big game, but i would not use the vanish on my weed-eater, there are supoosedly better floru's out there but that is my only personel experience
another place to look would be www.bassboatcentral.com see what those guys recommend, good luck especailly with the gin clear water[:@]

Trilene has a line called tournament strength that wasn't fluorocarbon but seemed to disappear in the water like fluorocarbon. Good against memory, abrasion and casts almost as well as trilene XL

Trilene XL ...now your talkin..Been my favorite mono for years...till ONESHOT7 got me hooked on Powerpro ..now there's no more line breakage..My crappie / bluegill rods are all filled with 4 or 6 pound Trilene XL. If it works...don't fix it.
Thanks for the link g. After reading whateveryone is saying, I am going to look at the alternatives. Berkley has new Fireline Crystal, a supposedly clear braid, and P-Line has Floroclear, which is a copolymer line with a fluro coating. I know for a fact my local shop has the Fireline product, they had a big display up last time I was there. They carry P-Line too but I don't know if they'll have the Floroclear. I've got Smoke color Fireline on my salmon rod and I really like the stuff, it lasts forever, and I've yet to have it break under any circumstance. When spooling a baitcaster with braid, you pick the braid that matches the break strength of mono that the baitcaster is recommended for or do you pick the one closest to the line diameter regardless of breaking strength? In other words, do I choose 15#braid and end up with 300 yds of line on the reel or do I get the braid that is the same diameter as 15# even though it's probably 80# test?

Grizz I usually like to go with something in between. Like you mentioned if you go with the same # braid as mono you are gonna have braid about the diameter of 2# line which would put about 300 yards of line on you spool andBraid is pretty expensive stuff. I'm using braid on 3 of my reels right now. On two of them I am using 30 pound powerpro which is equivalent in diameter to either 8 or 10# mono can't remember for sure. And on the other I am using 40# spiderwire stealth which is = 12#mono i believe. Just for the record I prefer the power pro over the spiderwire. It is really awesome line. The way I look at it is, if you use a low # braided line you are really defeating the purpose of it. Just use mono. just my .02

I'm not trying to be Mr. Negative here but if it's like regula Fireline..I'd leave it alone..
Why??
Cast weird
Black dye comes off on your hands
To visable for the fish.
I'd go to Power Pro for a braid...just my opinoin..I'm usually not negative but had bad experiences with a few lines .Two of them were Fireline and Vanish....I've used Power Pro an dlove it and Trilene Xl Those are my top 2 favorites for what it's worth.
