Default OOPS, I screwed up

Esp. tolethal, in the salmonid quiz post I told you that bulls are true trout and dollies are char. Messed that up. They are different species, bulls=Salvelinus confluentus, dollies=Salvelinus malma, but they are both char. Char have a dark body with light spots; trout have a light body with dark spots. Also wrong about: neither fish is an arctic char which is Salvelinus alpinus. Sorry guys. Maybe next time I'll check it out before I open my mouth to speak(metaphorically speaking).

I messed up too..
I've had my anger under control pretty good lately till...2 nights ago.[:@]
I bought a new Pinnacle Reel. I got out my new 25.00 spool of Power pro.330 yd spool. I carefully wound up my reel nice and tight and full. I had a couple of cats in my bedroom watching me. I then tied on a zoom red shad. I went to reel in the slack and practive my new reel out side to adjust the spool. OH NO!!!! somehow...the reel had a horrible bird's nest in it. Ususally you can cut off about 10 yds right.??? Not this baby. I was ticked. I had to cut off the entire spool and strt over again. It was the worst mess I've ever seen. I don't know what happened either but I was upset. Today when I put this reel on my new Team Diawa I realized I had scaped the reel pretty bad with my knife. yeah...I messed up too. Right now it's ok though. new line and ready to go.haven't had one of these days in a while.

Chuck, keep the reel from getting full. I usually leave about 1/8" left or even a little more. A pick is usually a good tool to get the nests out rather than a knife. When I get them and we all do from time to time I usually push my thumb down on the reel and hit the thumb bar and turn the reel while pushing down on the line. It often will give you some slack and you can get the birds nest out. Other tips I can give is try to not cast hard into the wind if possible. Unless you are skilled at level wind reels and have a good quality reel it is inviting a real bad nest. Once you get used to them there is no more efficient way to fish things like spinner baits jerk baits and deep divers. I still like spinning rods and reels for Carolina and finesse fishing with light tackle. If you ever get the chance to try out one of those newer models that cost a fortune don't do it. It will be hard to go back because they work so well and actually cover up mistakes. With the high end reels I can trhow even the lightest baits into the wind and they just sail. Still ice in front of the house so it will be a few weeks yet for me...Good fishing buddy

Mr. Lucky,
I always load my reel to 1/8 I had my reel pick...did not work. The line was like wax..stuck together. It was very weird my friend. I nearly get 98% of all my backlashes adn I am pretty patient. This was a backlash from ..you know where LOL.

Did I read that right, you got a bird's nest before you even cast? How did you spool the reel? Did one of your cats try to play with the line as you were putting it on? On another note you only paid $50 at Wally World for the Pinnacle? Let me know how that works out! I want to set up a rod for crankbaits and have been looking for a reel with 6.0-6.3:1 gear ratio at a decent price. I was looking at a Lew's from Cabela's but am having second thoughts(I hate buying something I haven't held in my hands). I want to put the reel on a 7' M-power E-glass rod from Cabela's using 10 lb mono. I love cranking for smalliesand I think that would be a near perfect set-up at a reasonable price.

Did I read that right, you got a bird's nest before you even cast?Thankyou sir for reading carefully. Yes ..it was a horrible back lash. The top roll of string was 1/2 inch deep.[:@]that was weird. I've been fishing for 45 years so I know every little finesse secret on getting them out...but not this one. The string was so knotted up I couldn't work with more than 1 inch of line ata time. I thought the string might have been faulted because a waxyresidue was sticking the string together. I was ticked. I was racing against the setting sun and was dying to find out howfar my new baitcaster would cast. I took a deep breath andafter trying my reel pick a while began cutting line off. Usually this works ..but it didn't . I cleaned the reel off and respooled. I cast her about 20 times this morning adjusting the spool as I normally do and she was perfect. weird man..How did you spool the reel?Like I've been doing for 45 years. I run the string through the eyelet closest to the reel.Ikeep tention on the line while reeling in.Trust me..I don't get backlashes very often. I know my reels and cast accordingly..not too easy and not too hard.Did one of your cats try to play with the line as you were putting it on?now that is a strong possiblity..they are quick. On another note you only paid $50 at Wally World for the Pinnacle?48.00 was their best model. I like the high speed retrieve.6.2Let me know how that works out!Sure will. ..right now it's my best caster. 30 yds with a littel 3/16 ounce bullet and 7" Zoom worm.I want to set up a rod for crankbaits and have been looking for a reel with 6.0-6.3:1 gear ratio at a decent price. I was looking at a Lew's from Cabela's but am having second thoughts(I hate buying something I haven't held in my hands).Me too. I'm a very cautious buyer.I've had a 7 foot Lightening Rod in my hand 10 times...at Wally.Last night I said shoot..I'm off for 12 weeks this summer. I know a man that consistently catches huge bass in the summer carolining so I thought I'm going for it..They were out so I moved a step up for 49.00 a 7 foot Team Diawa..Man it feels very nice. I want to put the reel on a 7' M-power E-glass rod from Cabela's using 10 lb mono. I love cranking for smalliesand I think that would be a near perfect set-up at a reasonable price. So far I've had no backlashes while casting .I'm a very cautious caster and the adjustable has plenty more adjustment to make the reel turn even smoother. I'm getting zero backlash at nice 90 feet cast.

I know this will be my #1 go to rod. I love the feel. Team Diawa makes a nice slender but strong and sensitive rod. I like it better than the All Star. It's the best feeling rod I've got .
I'll let you know how it does on fish next weekend.
Happy Easter,
C7

Griz.... Yeah..I googled up bull trout and dolly varden and learned a lot...I WAS pretty sure they were all char, but did not know that dollies, bulls and arctic char were 3 distinct char species...

There's good reason for the confusion, because according to the information I read, dolly varden are still called bull trout in some parts of Canada, and until the fairly recentpast bull trout and dollies were considered the same species...

Bull trout, it seems are a threatened species in most of thier former range, while dolly vardens are thriving in much of thier range, including Alaska, where I caught them...
