awesome!! 3 of my buddies went up to Elk access area tuesday and drug me along. i show up with a 5ft 6" ultralight and my 5wt 8ft flyrod...im still learning to ropes of flyfishing...and dont know much about steelhead period. and the tiny ultralight made it IMPOSSIBLE to get a good drift. i caught 1 smolt all day. missed a few fish but i doubt any were steelies. i just wasnt rigged for them. fishing super highly pressured fish presentation is key...them big fish GOTTA eat....but they aint eating something they know doesnt look right. if i was thinkin i woulda put the spinning reel on the fly rod. or...fished live bait on the fly rod....

1 buddy caught 2 and lost 2. the other caught like 5 and missed and lost more. the other caught a pile of smolts and a trout he swears was a 14-16 inch brookie...i seen the shaped..definently a trout but i dont know if it was a brookie...

none of my buddies fly fish...i bought some sucker spawns and some egg patterns etc...and fished some other wolly buggers i had...no luck...im still learning the ropes of flyfishing though

my 1 buddy landed 1 about 27 or so...he lost one that was bigger i got a good look at...

never fished for steelhead before the other day...i might have to get into it....looks like a blast...cant beat big powerful fish!! what kinda flies work well for you up there?? incase id ever make it back...if i kill a buck early in the fall i might make it up there in the fall...

Nice fish and nice pictures...I love steelheading, just don't care for the crowds....

Mauser..Your 5 wt. 8 footer should work just fine...I'm no expert fly fisherman, but I manage to catch my share on tackle similar to yours..My current favorite outfit is Loomis 9 foot 5 weight, but I've used 8 and 8 1/2 footers also...

I've had very good luck with white wooley buggers in 8 or 10, various sucker spawn patterns and various bead head nymphs from 12-16 in such patterns as black stone fly or prince... Use a strike indicator and add micro shot as needed to be sure you are drifting near bottom....For steelies you need to be ticking bottom..
