Man, we fish them in the day time here. We stay in the shack and jig for them. We also like to keep them alive if possible for bait. Alot of fish like to eat them. We can only keep up to 200 of them at a time.
They don't bite in the day here. I only caught one in daylight and fished for 3 hours! We can keep as many as we can catch, but we didn't even have close to 200. Some people use them for bait, but we like to eat them.

Hehehehe... Buck...Those smelt sure sound GOOD, floured and deep fried....REGARDLESS of how good they may be as bait, Phil...
Around here in the Finger Lakes smelt fishing by hook & line is unheard of...
There was a dip netting fishery that has declined over the years...Still some at Cayuga lake and a limited amount at Keuka Lake, but Seneca Lake is done as far as smelt are concerned....
Two quarts...??.. Seems hardly worth going out for.. I've seen nights when you'd have your limit in one dip........
Our local limit is 8 quarts, and in the Lake Ontario tribs, there IS no limit, that is, unless it's changed in the last few years...Before anybody goes up and fills up a garbage can, they'd be wise to check the regs... I have heard of guys going up to the Niagara River and actually bringing home garbage cans full of smelt...Sounds kind of excessive to me...In the first place, I'd hate to have to CLEAN that many of the little buggers...

No it's not really but, I take 2 kids with me and we get 6 quarts so it is a little better that way. On the other side of the river in New Brunswick they can keep all they want. Folks used to go over there and get them but, now customs takes the extra.[:@]So you still get only 2 quarts here.
i used to hunt hares, but now grouse and deer mostly. Not much turkeys in this area though they are being stocked here now. Will be trying it this year in the southern part of the state.
I drew a moose tag in NB a couple of years ago.... Crossed at Calais on the way up, but had to come back through Houlton because I got my bull and for whatever reason US customs at Calais doesn't process the importation info for moose..
Good luck with the turkeys...Southern/central Maine has a large and rapidly expanding turkey population with lots of relatively naiive birds and lots of hunting access..For the next few years It's going to be one of the "hot" places in the country to hunt gobblers..
