RE: fav. trout lure
For rainbows, I like using roostertails and spoons. They work on browns too. Play with different weights. Sometimes they want something big and sometimes they want something small.
Now, for bait, I rig up my line so that a swivel slides up&down my line, to which I attach a 5 inch piece of leader. Then I put on enough split shot to get some distance.
At the end of the line, not the leader,I tie on another swivel (which stops the other swivel from sliding off the line, and tie about a 12 inch piece of leader.
Then I tie a hook to the end of the 12 in. leader, typically a size 14,and add Power Bait, BUT I form the Power Bait to look like a minnow! Rainbow color worked best for me.
Now, more about the shot... the idea is to cast out and puposely get the shot stuck in the rocks, so you don't want it ultra loose, but you also don't want it too tight. Once you get your shot stuck, real up the slack. The current will make the rod tip bob, Don't confuse that with a strike. When a fish does strike it'll either strike so hard that it pulls that shot off and hook itself or the tip will bend like crazy...not with the flow of the river.
