Default question about a new fly reel

well i'm getting in to fly fishing and i'm buying a new reel. i already have a realy nice rod its a cortland its my dads and he give it to me he also has a realy nice cortland rod and reel combo. ive fly fished before but it was with a crappy eagle claw combo. so know that i go a nice rod i figured i'd get me a nice reel. i'll be using it in the river mostly and some times on the lake. it'llbe for smallies, large mouth, blue gills, and some trout. so i need to know a good fairly cheap fly reel right now i'm lookin at the G.Loomis Venture reel what do you guys think?

Default RE: question about a new fly reel

i think basic fly reels are over rated passed...say 100 bucks TOPS. all they do is hold line and reel it back in. when you get into multipliers, drag systems etc then i can see them being priced high...but i dont know..maybe i need to fish with a GOOOD reel and ill change my mind. i DO want a nice combo this year..but to me the rod and line are more important. i mean i wouldnt put a 15$ reel on a 200$ rod..but i wouldnt go all out and buy a 300$ line holder..

I like my orvis reel and have an extra spool for it so I can change it if I need to. One has floating line and the other has sinking tip for fishing nymphs with. I also have a pfleuger for fishing salmon with so, I think part of it depends on what you want to yse it on.
