Default Boat motor question

hi guys
need a little help. Note the black rectangular shape in the middle of this Nissan motor. There is a 5/16th hex screw at the bottom
of that rectangle. There is oil coming out of mine. Looks like
regular 30 weight motor oil. Can someone tell me
what this screw is for.It is not the port for the
propellor grease. Those are circled in red.,
And why it might be leaking.
Thanks

Default RE: Boat motor question

chuck the black little rectangle is the water intake, how much oil is leaking out? this would be my biggest question. your new motor is a four stroke correct???, the only way i could see oil coming out there would be a crank seal on the motor or oil going out with the exhaust thru the exhaust tube, i would suspect a seal, if it just a little residue probably not a big deal, any engine with the crank standing verticle like a lawn mower is going to let a little oil by, if its really leaking/pouring out i'd take it and have it checked, dont forget to check you crankcase oil level just to be on the safe side, this is my best guess but it really depend on if it is leaking/pouing out or just residue like all engines build up around screws and gaskets.

i'll be off line till tomorrow evening, i'll check back with you later or maybe somone else can chime in, all of my boating has beentwo stroke stuff

Default RE: Boat motor question

Thanks so much brother...I searched the web last night trying to find a picture of an exploded view of an outboard. I could not find one.
chuck the black little rectangle is the water intake, how much oil is leaking out?Not hardly any...1/4 teaspoon. I wiped it off and checked it later and it was try. I was worried and poured about a tablespoon of 40 weight shell in it. After reading the manual I realized I shouldn't have done that. It has to hav ethe correct oil that is made for high RPMs .Therefore I planto change the oil from the crankcase. Live and learn.LOLthis would be my biggest question. your new motor is a four stroke correct???,Correct...and started first crank last weekend..YES !the only way i could see oil coming out there would be a crank seal on the motor or oil going out with the exhaust thru the exhaust tube,I did notice some smoke last week..just a little.i would suspect a seal, if it just a little residue probably not a big deal, ok very little.any engine with the crank standing verticle like a lawn mower is going to let a little oil by, if its really leaking/pouring out i'd take it and have it checked, dont forget to check you crankcase oil level just to be on the safe side, this is my best guess but it really depend on if it is leaking/pouing out or just residue like all engines build up around screws and gaskets.

I really appreciate your help Keith. Question..they say once a year to change the water pump empeller. Is this hardto do and howdo I find it. I've got some small engine experience.I've completely over hauled2 Brigggs and Stratton 4 HP lawn mower engines.

not sure on your motor, all i have ever done is merc's and johnson/evinrudes, mercury is the easiest for me, but none have ever been that much trouble, if you'll ask a boat mechanic most will tell you what to do and what not[:@][:-], BTW i change mine out yearly, because of the dirt and sand that get caught in milfoil and hydrilla

its your lower unit oil. take out the top screw. put a bucket under the motor, then remove the bottom screw. drain all the oil out. make sure its not milky or theres no chunks of metal in it. Take both screws to an auto parts store, and get some rubber O rings the same size. Get some 80w90 gear lube (marine preferably). Should take two tubes. Fill it from the bottom. Keep squeezing it until it overflows from the top hole. get a helper to put the top screw back in, then have him/her quickly insert the bottom screw when you take out the fill tube.

EDIT: ok, didnt see the whole thing. But you just got some detailed instructions on how to change the lower unit oil

If its leaking out of the water impeller, a tiny bit is normal. Just as a procaution, pull the spark plugs and make sure there isnt any water in the cylinders, if not, your fine. I recently rebuilt my motor, and the first few times I took it out, I overlubed the water impeller housing, and it leaked about a dime sized amount.

Remove the screw the whole way, and replace the O ring with a gasket. The lower unit is under extreme amounts of pressure and torque even on a small motor.

If its leaking out of the water impeller, a tiny bit is normal. OK Thanks Josh..I just thought that was odd for a brand new motor. Just as a procaution, pull the spark plugs and make sure there isnt any water in the cylinders, if not, your fine. Josh..I'm pretty mechanically minded. Can you explain to me how to change the empeller on the water pump?
I don't plan ot do it now but I like to think about these things in advance. I used to have a lawn service and I would get ticked off waiiting 30 days for my mower to get fixed. I bought a Briggs and Stratton book and read that baby from cover to cover twice and from then on did ALL my repairs. I was very poor then and I could literaly over all a 4 HP engine for 18 dollars back in the 80s. Rings and diaphram kit for the carb. I'd lap the valves and stick in points and condenser ,,sand lightly on the magnet end of the flywheel and she'd run ,like a clock. The coil was set in position with a post card.

no need replace the impeller. Just remove that 5/16th" screw (have someone hold their finger over the hole), and get a rubber O ring and place over the shaft of the screw. That should keep it from leaking again.

I really appreciate the feed back Josh..

On the question about the empellor...that was for the future. The manual says that should be changed once a year. My year would be up in June.
Questions

1. Is the empellor right behind that screw?
and thanks..I will put an O ring on the shaft of that 5/16th screw.
