Fish on Sunday morning out of Michigan city Indiana aboard Brandi-k charters with my dad and my wife. Started out at 5:30 AM and it was hot, couldnt keep lines in the water and had tangles everywhere in the back of the boat. It was tough becuase the boats first mate couldnt make it that day, so we had to deal with a lot of the things a mate does, including driving the boat on some occasions even when the waves got to 3-4 feet which wasnt easy. But by 7:30 we had 11 fish in the cooler and had lost a handul more. About 9 the action really slowed down, it got windy and like i said, the waves went from calm to about 4 feet in a half hour. Anyways, we ended up with 16 fish, 9 coho/4kings/2 steelehead and 1 laker. The surprsing thing was we were the only boat in this area for the morning bite, everyone else ran way east and fished out by new buffalo michigan. Meanwhile, we ran about 15 minutes due north of the harbor and could still see land and were just killing em. The people who ran east struggled and eventually found their way back to us.
Congatulations, we only have landlock salmon and lake trout here.
But you can fish all day and not a bite and that would be the whole darn lake. The next time the whole place is bitting hard and it seems you couldn't shake a fish off. And then they stop just as quick as they started. Is it like that there ?
thats awesome come aug 13 ill be in ludington fishen for kings w/ my dad and grandpa we tow our own boat up there tho we have been doin it for yrs.
I have yet to fish out of any port in Michigan, but normally we end up in Michigan waters when we set lines. It doesnt take long to cross into michigan water from Indiana. I hear Ludington is great for big Kings starting in July. It's the primary catch from what i have read. I will have to get up there and try it at some point.

It can be that way here too. In fact, just last Sunday the same charter i took said he had to really work hard for bites. Another captain we talked to at the cleaning station said last saturday he went 12 for 16, then the very next morning he ran to the same spot and used the same setup and didnt even get one release. Normally when we go out in late June or July, we get on some fish. Last year we went on the 16th of July and ended up with 10 Kings and 1 laker. But we also went back up there in September for the fall King run and didnt even get a hit. Fishing in the fall for the big spawning kings is very hit or miss. The captain only charged us for gas that day. Anytime before sunup to about 8 or 9am can be really hot and is usally the best bite of the day. They pretty much shut off on us after 9 am, but by then we already had a cooler of fish. After that you just kinda pick away at em.
