Don't know if I'll ever see that guy again. I had the motor in at the local boat shop and they told the old man just went on and on about it. Said they could give me his name if I wanted, I wasn't interested then, and honestly don't know if I would be now. I realize now the original post may have been a little misleading, sorry for that.
Anyway its a Evinrude 115 (somewhere near a 1983). After I redid the carbs myself the thing would start and idle fine and shift into gear fine. BUT in water it wouldn't shift into gear without dying. I tried everything I knew to get the thing to work. But ended up taking it in to get tuned up. It's just a little finicky now...just requires a little special touch from the driver

. I can work it fine, but my buddy (who understands engines better than I do) can never get into reverse with killing it....That is until it warms up, then anyone can work the throttle. Don't know how strong it runs compared to other/new 115s but on that 17' fiberglass boat its got all the balls you need and then some. You can literal dump someone out of the front seat if you wanted to, without going wide open![8D]
